I have a damaged stud in the head that holds the exhaust manifold on F-12 I would like to replace. It has very few treads left. Should I retread it lower and double nut it to remove it? Should I heat it will that damage the head? Or should I just cut it off drill it out and retape it? Thanks for any input oldiron29

Old Iron,A statement of experence,I was removing the manifold studs from a F20 head,I used extream heat,The stud cooled and came out,While I was standing there we heard a loud crack,I just trowed it away and went to look for another one.Found another one with bad studs and I took it to the machine shop and all is well

I would like to add emphesis to Randy's excellent answer, Yes - definitely use a good deal of heat on the stud. Glowing red. Then, let it cool a little and then try turning it out with the double nut arrangement. mike

I would use the double nut trick first. Less chance of drilling a crooked pilot hole and damaging the threads. I am guessing that I am not the only that has trouble keeping the drill lined up straight. You may need to put a little heat to the stud to break the rust bond.
