On the Farmall M, can I assume if there is no X1 suffix, that it was originally a kerosene or distillate tractor? Also, if the X1 is in a different script/font/size, was it added afterwards during a dealer engine rebuild? Then, these tractors would have been kerosene or distillate originally also?

None of my Ms have suffixes, so does that mean they are setup for gas, kerosene, or distilate? They are 40 and 41s, no suffixes at all, but they do have the small tanks, so one would assume "dual fuel". BUT... I had a 49 an a 50, no suffixes either, and no small tank, so one would assume gas. I think they all had something to do with the year built. You wouldnt see an X1 on say a Super M, but would see X3 on a Super M ordered for kerosene.

John the for the most part M tractors that were not gasoline had no suffix added. X1 was put on M through 52 models for gasoline. I'm not trying to say your wrong or other things didn't occur.

With IH there always seems to be a exception, gray area or question mark on some things. On M tractors the suffix codes didn't start being used until serial # 18159. According to some sources a few gasoline were sold before then. Also IH tested a gasoline M at Newbraska in 1939, but it may not have been a regular production tractor. If your tractor is later than the above serial # the engine should have a X1 after its serial # also. Sometimes the stampings are a little slopy there.

The code for gasoline is X1, kerosene is X3, distilatte is X17. The X5 is for 5,000 foot altitude. This is from Guy Fay's International Harvester Tractor data book.

Just to add what Rusty said.. The first gas only tractors that came out in prior to june of 40 had a lower compression gas engine then say the latter gas engines in the line.

I can't seem to find my book that shows the suffix meaning, but basically, if there is NO suffix, it was originally a distillate fuel burner. A kerosene burner would have a suffix all its own, and the gasoline option for sure is X1. But, there is also some speculation that a few of the gasoline optioned tractors may have left the factory without the X1 suffix on the tag. For some reason, I'm thinking the kerosene burners had the suffix X5, but don't quote me.
