Hello from frigid MN!! Have a 46 M with the live pump on the distributor mount. Started and stalled in a heart beat on Saturday (-10 degrees) pulled the cap and the rotor does not turn. Never had one apart, any ideas what happened? Thanks in advance for the help.

if you added the live pump and did not change the cam gear, thats prolly the cam gear that let go. pull the valve cover, turn the motor over. if the rocker arms arent moving, its the cam gear.

If it's an IH hydraulic pump, the keyway on the drive gear probably sheared. It happened on Dad's Super M several times, usually when shaking the manure off the end gate of the spreader. Either he was running the belly pump reservoir dry with the gate all the way up, or the shock load of the gate bouncing up and down was too much.

I remember one time, he had a part of a load on when it sheared. He just wrapped a chain on the front axle, engaged the PTO, put it in 3rd, and had me tow him around the field! Ground driven spreader :)

Remove the oil fill cap and the screen inside the oil fill opening and you can see the idler gear that drives the pump. Chuck

I had the roll pin that holds that holds the drive gear to the distributor shaft break on my SMTA, but that was because the inside of the distributor was jammed. With it being that cold I would suspect the gear that drives the pump and distributor, probably too much load with cold oil. If you remove pump and distributor you can see the gear through the hole. I would think it would have made some noise though if that gear broke.

Most likely, the timing gear(s) driving the pump/distributor broke.

If you are LUCKY, it's just the little pinion gear that drives the distributor. (ASSUMING an IH distributor.)

First thing I thought of was a roll pin like an old Ford 300-6cyl with a bad oil pump, but I think you are probably right, I am new to tractors but I thought that pump might be a bit of a load on those old timing gears. I was hoping there was a known problem with distributors or something. thanks for the reply.
