I have put in newer style bearings that are sealed on one side, do I still grease it on the outside?

Ok, looks like the consensus is I have it on backwards. Glad I asked here when I had doubts about it.

Thanks everyone for the input, that's what I love about this site, lots of folks offering help to a beginner like me.

Randy

Hey Randy, turn that bearing around! oil from the rear end won't grease the outers, it only lubes the inners. As said below, the sheild keeps the grease out of the axle housing and in the bearing. Looks like good paint job is on the way! Nice and clean!

The rear end oil will reach that bearing, I think the grease is just to act as an aid to the outer dust shield. The C has an inner seal, if the outside one leaks, you must also replace the inner seal. The H/M does not have an inner seal.

The only way the rear end oil will reach that bearing is if the rear end is overfilled. The axle is above the level plug.

neblinc you have that bearing in backwards the shield is supposed to keep the grease from just filling up the torque tube there is a seal up next to the transmission to stop oil from getting in the torque tube i had a bearing that was sealed on both sides i just poped one side out and put it in

Service manual says the shield goes on the inside - towards the differential.

I guess you could grease that zerk but why? It's not going to reach the bearing. Just come out the axle somewhere sometime. I don't know about you, but I worry like crazy about bare metal castings oxidizing. Hope you have treated them with metal prep and have a coat of epoxy primer on them real soon. Looks like you are doing the best restoration I've seen yet on this board.

Unless it is dry like where I live in SW Kansas -- I have left parts for months like that - no rust. Also, I do not like to put phosphoric acid (metal prep) on cast, for fear it will lift the paint later. I have done that in the past without problems, but now I don't think it's a good idea. As you say epoxy is the way to go if you are in a rusty area.

Looks to me that the trans oil makes it to those outside bearings, I guess I better take a closer look where the oil level will end up.

I think I ma more confused now :?

To dispute a couple a sugestions, later models 560 etc did not have grease fittings, same style axle housing.

I had to get a sealed bearing when I replaced the bearing on the input shaft to the transmission. I just pealed away the metal seal and let it get lubricated by the transmission grease. This should work also.

I think the shielded side should face the differential housing. The oil from the rear end does not reach the outer bearing and you will not get any lube to the bearing through the shield. I believe the shielded side is meant to keep the axle housing from filling up with grease.

Yup, like Wayne says won't hurt but you don't "have to".

A little grease will help the felt ring stay soft and assist in preventing dirt entry.
