I recently aquired a '41 W6 that has the diff gears welded solid. It came with a '45 Farmall. One of those take'em both or leave'em both deals.

Will the diff gears from the Farmall work in the W6? I haven't got parts books for either of these tractors so I'm leaning on the experience of those who have gone before.

Dave.

Yes the Farmall is an "M". Sorry 'bout that.

I kinda like the prospect of transplanting the crown and pinion too. The W6 has 24" rear tires so it should make a heck of a good slow racer. chuckle

I'll be like everyone except John M and assume he meant Farmall M.
Now he said the spider gears in the diff were welded. Those should be the same between the two tractors. What might be a different ratio are the ring and pinion gears. Those should be removable from the welded-up diff and installed on the diff out of the M, I believe. In fact it's probably easiest and best to transfer the ring and pinion gears if possible.

With the ring and pinion out of the M, you'll have a really slow W6, maybe, unless they made up for the wheel size difference by using larger bull pinions and smaller bull gears. The only way to tell for sure is to count the teeth on each of the ring gears and pinions.

Thanks Randy. Looks like I should have taken a short stroll on this forum before posting the question.

I agree they will interchange, but are they the same ratio? The W6 has smaller diameter wheels than the Farmall, yet the ground speeds for any given gear are the same. There has to be something different about them.
