Sorry about the quality of this photo. It was taken about 75 yrs ago. My father was a manager for IHC in western Kansas in the early 1930s. This photo is a pre production model doing breakdown tests. The photo was taken prior to 1934. Not sure but it is pulling either two 4 or two 5 point gang blows. Pretty impressive for the time. Note the air cleaner behind the exhaust pipe, would this help identify it? I would guess this was one to two years before production began. Photo is also in "help identify"

the w6 is around 37 hp,the wd40 was around 50 hp.i was told it would out pull a wd9, rated at46 dbr hp.hp gradually increased-super wd9 57hp,650 was at 60 hp,660 at 71 dbr hp.the wd40 was a powerful machine and believe it can do what this picture shows.those were a big 50 horses not shetlands in the newer tractors.

From what you can see of the engine, I'd say its a WD-40. If it were a WA-40 or WK-40 you would see a big gap between the top of the engine and the hood since they were flatheads. The W-40 wasn't built till 1937. The first production WD-40 was built in May of 1935.

From the pictures I have it appears to be a W or WD 40. However, I didn't know that a 37 HP tractor could pull 8-10 bottoms. Nebraska tractor test for that model indicates it pulled 3731 lbs at 3.67 mph -- someone with better math ability than me can convert that to tillage implements. By comparison, the end of an era IH 650D pulled 4708 lbs at 4.47 mph with 43.40 HP. the 650 was IH's largest wheel tractor in the mid-50's, replaced by the 6 cyl 660 -- HP went up from there.

appears to be a wd40 by the air cleaner.

Given the load it is pulling and the time frame, I would venture to guess a pre-production WD-40, the first IH diesel wheel tractor.

Thanks guys! WD 40 Fits the time frame. He used to say that they would load the tractors down and try to break them. They also did breakdown tests on tracked vehicles. I had a pic of a tractor on tracks but can't find it.
