Forgot to mention, the Serial number tag on a 856 custom has the initials "CUST" labeled on the tag...can't miss the letters because they really stand out stamped into the tag.

I have an 856 custom going on my auction sat. the 26th of Jan. in SW Michigan. It's been a really good tractor. You can see the list and directions at www.schraderauction.com Thanks Rob

We bought a new 856 Diesel custom in 69 and had above mentioned plus 34 inch rear tires. After owning it 2 years we added the extra fender lights and added a turbo and made a real tractor out of it. I put a lot of hours on that tractor and was very good to us. Just like the Biscayne model of Chevys. Add the third taillight, finish off the chrome and put on Caprice emblems and no one was the wiser except mama and the banker. Migraine

What they said, plus a few others:

Smaller air cleaner

One set of fender lights

Good luck.

The custom had only one rear hydraulic outlet. It had a smaller fuel tank and the battery covers were an angle iron hold down in place of a full cover. Chuck

The 856 Custom was in response to the JD 4000, also the Oliver 1850 Custom. These were "no frills" versions, intended to replace a smaller model(756, 3020, 1750)and pull the same implements at higher speeds.

856/656 Utility in reply to hardscrabble, 01-19-2008 16:54:01
This is so kewl! I learn new things every time I log into this group.
.
This board recommended I look for a 656 or 856 utility. So what is the difference between the others and the "utility?"

Daniel, I remember your first post, a utility will have a lower profile with probably 30 inch rear wheels instead of 34 or 38. The front axle will be set back for a shorter wheel base. the seat is lower so the driver will stradle the transmission. Rear axles are non ajustable so the width is changed by rim configuration. The 656 is the largest utility I know. A 574, 674, 584 or 684 might be worth considering also.
