I have a 1953 stage 1 Super H ser#18037 and I"m in the process of converting it to live hydraulics and need a little help to clear up some of the information I have read in the archives on this.
1. Being its a Super H I shouldn"t need to install the heavy duty timing gear for the 300 series pump I have right?
2.What is the best sump to use, the original belly pump, the rear end housing,or an external tank?
3.If its the rear end is the hydraulic oil heavy enough for the rear gearing?
4.Should the original belly pump be disconnected or removed?
5.I want to have 2 sets of hydraulics is there any other criterial for the spool valve besides open center and how many working ports?
6.Is there any heating issues to consider and should the system be filtered?
Thanks for the help I appreciate the information I have gotten from this forum, and Its great to see all the interest in old iron. Steve C.

Piston, I changed my 41H more than 30 years ago. I used the transmission-rear end housing for a reservoir, Hy-tran is better for all tractors than the heavier oils. IH began using it with the SMTA and 300, the gears and bearings were basicly the same as the H and M, but the life of the newer ones was greatly increased. With 80-90 oil here in Minnesota it was a common problem to have a bearing loosen and spin in its housing, Hy-tran stoped that. I use hyd. motors, then you need the large reservoir to keep heat down. For filters the first one is homemade, it is a 1 inch pipe cross with plastic plugs placed in the side ports and a cow magnet suspened between them. Then a suction strainer made from parts from Northern Tool, finaly a 10 micron filter in the return line. I draw the oil from the drain at bottom of rear end and return to the check hole on left side, there I added a street ell, close nipple and Tee so it raised the oil level more than two inchs. After many thousands of hours I have been very happy with it. Did basicly the same to the WD9. Good luck, Chuck

thanks, I"ve got one without a tag, the more motor vs chassis number info I get the better I can figure what the number should be.

You can also remove the internal parts of the belly pump for more capacity,As far as the gear change, yours should be fine, There is a lot of posts regarding changing the cam gear to a heavier one, The only tractors I remember having a problems with this were 400 and 450's. these were the ones that had fast hitch and without power steering, this made the 2pt very quick and subject to brake things

Steve, just out of curiosity, is your motor serial number between 20737 and 20745?

1.Original gear should be heavy enough to run pump
2.Depending on how much reservoir is needed probably an external tank ( belly pump don"t hold alot)
3.If it was mine I wouldn"t run hyd oil in rear end - but depends on how hard its used I suppose, hytrans lubes fine in my 806 rear end though
4. I would leave belly pump in( its already there and you might want another hyd circuit in the future for something)
5. Will you need "float" as well as down pressure?
6. Filters are always a good idea

hope this helps some, others might not agree, just my thoughts, Pat
p.s.- what state do you live in? will you be using it mainly in winter for snow etc?

If you want to use the belly pump as a reservoir, here's how:

third party image

You don't need to change the front cover or the timing gear, a pump should bolt right up.
