Rocker arm question for super A

Putting a new head gasket on my new pruchase, the Super A. I noticed that 2 rocker arms dont line up withe the valve stem. One is only hitting the valve stem with about 60% surface area. You can tell its been like that for a long time as there is a ware pattern in the tip of the rocker arm. I know on a car, they say this is critical to have the rockers hit dead on center of the valve as it will create side load and excessive wear on valve guides. On a tractor is this acceptable? Should I get spacers and center the rocker? Do they make spacers for this problem? There is already a wear groove in the tip of the rocker, If I move it, I will have to either grind it down or get another rocker. Have you guys run into this?

Thanks for all the help

Your reading my mind. I measured the shaft at 3/4 inch dia. I will head to the hardware store Monday and see what they can give me.

Where do you get the shims? I will see what I can do in my own garage with a bench grinder as for cleaning up the tip of the rocker. This tractor will only be used for mow duty on my 3 acres so it wont be used that much. Thereare only 2 rockers that need shimmed. Again, one is WAY off and its been like this for a while as the ware pattern indicates. Thanks for the help.

It's been awhile since I did one but I'm sure I got the shims from my place of work. Measure the diameter of the rocker shaft and I think any good hardware store will have something you can use. I've done the rockers on a grinder too. Use the side of the wheel, not the front and just follow the original radius as best you can and keep the surface square to the valve stem, don't create an angled surface.

I have seen this on a number of heads. The springs put side pressure on the rockers and they eventually wear into the sides of the supports. I face off the damaged areas and use shims to put everything back to center. I made a jig for refacing the arms but you can take them to any automotive machine shop and they can reface them. I believe the surfaces are only case hardened and will not be hard after removing the material needed but who cares unless this tractor is going into full time farming. Go to Link in the "Maynard" and "Super C" albums and you will find photos of finished heads, look close and you can see the shims.

Something is funny as they should be centered. When you grind the rocker smooth will it line up then? If your rockers are the stamped metal ones they could be heated and bent to straighten. The tractor emgine runs half speed when full throttle from a car and even then not enough hrs to make that much of a big thing. It was running when you tore it down.
