I've been meaning to ask this, but it just never seems to get done...

A few weeks ago I was installing a bypass block on my Cub's touch control. First thing I did was remove the 1/8" pipe plug on the right side of the TC block to drain the oil, holding a paint bucket under the drain hole.

Well, none of the oil made it into the paint bucket. I ended up WEARING it all, soaked to the skin from head to toe with hytran. I can still taste hytran weeks later.

This tractor sat for two months without starting before I did this, yet the oil sprayed out under high pressure. I would've thought the pressure would bleed off in that amount of time.

Ah, that makes sense. I thought I had a real problem...
The auxiliary reservoir that's now plumbed into the fill pipe is vented, so I should be "safe" until I take the loader off.

I did this once, but did not get as big a bath as you. But...I did learn one thing and that is to always take out the fill plug to vent the pressure before you take out the drain plug. As others said, these units have no vent and thus tend to build up some pressure over time.

I had this happen with the touch control on a C. It doesn't take long to bleed the pressure, that's for sure.

Several of the IH tractors have a solid plug in the hydraulic system, (no vent). Though strange in some ways, it keeps the oil much cleaner and free from water contamination. If there is a small leak into the system on the suction side only when operating, the pressure will build up in the resivoir until equalization happend with the leak. The fact that it did not leak down is a bit suprizing, but I believe it. This tells me that the shaft and pump shaft seals are great. I would look for suction side leaks for a bit, then probable ignore it and relieve pressure at the fill plug before breaking into the system in the future. JimN
