I need help with a decision

I have to get a new front end on my H. Right now it's up on jack stands.

I have a guy in my tractor club who has an old narrow front ped with two hubs, but only one rim. The side with the rim is seized, and the whole think is a bit rusty and rough. $20 for it. So, I'll need bearings, a rim, tires and tubes.
There is a complete ped at the junkyard for $100. I don't remember the condition of the tires. But it's also yellow, and I don't know when I could get some paint on it. It's a 45 minute drive, so I want to go for something other than just looking.
Anyway, I figure for the broke ped I'll be spending $30 for a rim. Tires, $20 a piece if I can find some. (Allan in NE mentioned he'd give me his off him new M, but shipping could be just as expensive) and I have no idea what bearings will cost me. But it all potentially could come out to less than $100. And every dime counts.

Which set do you think I ought to get?

brandonf said: hey mike dont worry to bad that single front is in prettybad shape to lol the axle shaft has to get built up and re milled consequently one of the outer races is totally smoked as in gone so the wheel needs to have some work addressed on it. maybe mill the inside of the wheel to get a lager od bearing and larger race, it appears that all of the front ends on old iron really take a beating and were run until NO bearings and No races were left then they just parked them lol

hang in there mike

take the yellow one

Sorry Brandon, I had no idea what the real condition of it was until I took it off the tractor and could move that wheel around. It didn't feel right.
Yeah, I think I'll go after the yellow one as soon as I can. I think coordinating a move from Iowa for a cheap one would be a pipe dream. :?

You could find one cheaper and in better shape in the YT Classified Ads or eBay.

I got 3 of those narrow fronts. One heavy and 2 light ones.

Mike you could have one of them light ones if we could get it there.

Gary

I'd like to talk to you more about this. Hopefully we could find someone coming out this way.

The single front is gone. That went in as part of a deal to get the new rear wheels with tires. Unfortunatly the rear tires aren't in as good as shape as I hoped, some weather cracking and a couple small chunks out, but I will repair them as best I can and use them for as long as I can. So I need a new front end to put the front of the tractor back down.

Man, you guys have to be kidding on those priceses were you are. I had to get a rim for my H, and the salvage yard owner wanted a $100.00, good rim with a 90% used tire, in upstate NY. If you saw my picture of the H with the ford loader behind it. youll see a jack and a piece of wood holding up the left side. Was like that for 3 months until hay was done so I could get her the tire.

For the money, I would go with the one from the yard. Those little things the rusty one needs will nickel and dime you to death and might cost more than the yard one. I speak from experiance! Personally if it was mine, I would just use the single front and sit back until a good deal shows up on a regular narrow front with decent tires. Just be sure to grease the single front axle well. If it is like the one on my F-12 and I think it is, there is no bearing in there, just the hardened axle shaft and rides right on the cast iron wheel. It has a large contact area so they wear very little as long as they have grease. They are a pain to take apart as the wheel has to be unbolted and the tire has to come off so I wouldn"t do that, just grease it good.

While there"s a good chance the complete front end will still need new bearings, I"d go for it. I haven"t heard that your tractor is running yet so why sweat the color? Paint is the cheapest part of the restoration if you"ve lowered your sights on that Porsche paint job you once talked about. I couldn"t find tires for close to $20 and I wasn"t shooting for a show class tractor.
