Just bought a Super A and head is leaking. I have the head ready to put back on and new gasket. I ordered a service man. but it hasnt come in yet. Can anyone tell me how many lbs torque is recommended for the head and the sequence I should tighten? Thanks for getting me going.

Make double sure you have the right head gasket. One is for tractors with a water pump. One gasket has smaller water passge holes, that is for the engines with the water pump. The other has larger holes which allows water to flow around faster using the thermic-syphon system. For years my tractor ran hot, and I found out it had the wrong gasket with the small holes and they restricted the flow. Either one will fit.

Give it a few coats of hi-temp aluminium paint first. Then after its dry replace the head and start in the center working each way to the ends end up with 80lbs. Then re-tighten after good warming up. Your gasket will usually say about re-torque. Instructions will say which side is up.

Gene, what manual does the 80 pounds come from. My IT manual says 65 pounds on head torque. I have heard that 80 was recommended now days, but curious about it.

The manuals say 65# but there has been an update to it. Somewhere I downloaded a sheet with the 80 lbs. on it. I have a copy of one for the C that says 80 lbs.

Randy & Mike, I knew I had heard that. I have always went with the 65 as that is what the old books said, and have never had a problem. Wonder why they decided to go to 80 after all this time?

I read somewhere that there were problems with coolant leaks. The change apparantly occurred after the last version of the manuals, which I assume was probably at or shortly after production ceased. Likely through a service bulletin of some sort. This is all speculation. The only place I have actually seen this in print is on Justin Weber's tuneup info on his web site www.weberstractorworks.com.

My manual is only 7 or 8 years old, and it still has 65 in it.

Except, your manual is a copy. I don't know when IH stopped updating them, probably 50-60 years ago. I think Case-IH does update the copyright, my C Operator's manual says 1999, but they do not update the contents.

That is where I got the spec sheet for my C. I printed it out and couldn't remember the source. Thanks.

You will need to re-torque the head to 80 ft-lbs. after warming the engine up to operating temperature. This means that you have to take the rocker arm off to do this and then you get to reset the valve clearances.

Torque: Tighten to 80 lbs in three stages; Do all at 25lbs; then do all at 50lbs; then 80 lbs.
Sequence: Start with the middle two and work in a concentric circle moving toward each end at the same time.
Don't forget some aluminum paint on your head gasket.
