Buying another M

The past 3 M's I've gotten haven't been running and required a lot of work to get going. The one I'm looking at getting now runs however the head and part of the block have been welded. Guy says for about 10 years it's run that way and seems to run fine. What is a fair price for a running M with rough paint and a few oil leaks run for?

Thanks,

My wife surprised me the other day.I was talkin to a guy on the phone about tractors and said he had 6 he would like to get rid of. Told him I belonged to Maine Antique tractor Club and pulled and showed my 47A,830 case 39jdH and wifes 49MHpony.He said,Ya aint got no Farmalls? I said nope but I built a M pulling eng for a buddy of mine and he aint got beat all summer.Well he says,I got one that will beat him and you ought to come try her out.Said twas a wheatland 450 and the price was right.Wife said,Why dont you go look at it and maybe buy it? I told her she was just looking to get outta the house and out to dinner. She smiled and said, yup that would be nice.Gonna go look, and eat. 22yrs and going strong Hoss

SD-I brought one home a couple years ago in similar condition in a package deal with a 7 ft shredder. I figure the tractor price was about $500 of the total. It had one new rear tire and the block had a BIG crack. I found another block for it but the thing is still running with the cracked block. Might have been too much but I liked the elderly gent who had bought it new and told him it wouldn't be scrapped in my lifetime. Good Luck

If you already have 3 M's why would you want to buy one with a welded head and block. I've seen many, many M's the past few years, none had welded heads and blocks. Your present M's can't use the dollars for refurbishing?

Why buy one like that? For the fun naturally! The fun of owning 50 year old equipment in mystery condition and with questionable repairs, such as the '51 M I bought with the transmission problem or the JD A we aquired a 2 years ago that turned out to be more than a little bit stuck!

Or maybe it's just too good a deal to pass up!

Or perhaps we could start "Farmall Friends", sort of like "Fuzzy Friends" that rescues animals except this group would attempt to rescue every piece of iron that ever had Red Paint on it.

I know I just kind of I don't know like to collect, my wife don't care for it. But I love it. Have a couple of sons and would like to have a tractor for them to drive in a parade or putt around in. Just got the fever, deer huntings over and a lot more time in the shop. Should be getting a lot of work done inside the house just aint as fun! Gotta have about twenty irons in the fire or I feel like I'm sitting around.

Just tell people that you're "Multi-tasking".

I've found that it sounds better than "I have way too many projects".

Multitasking, I'll remember that, my wife calls it procrastinating or something of that nature, ha ha! She's still upset about me looking at something else to buy but like i told er at least this one runs hun!! She found great humor in it.

See, now that's a good approach! You pointed out that at least that one runs, thus illustrating that the functionality of your aquisitions is trending up.

Next find one that comes with some attachment or implement and when she fusses you can say, "Look, this one comes with _usefull equipment_!"

The way M's and H's have been changing hands lately maybe they should be used as currency? Might be more stable? I am afraid that when it comes to vintage tractors, the "thrill of the hunt" is the most fun for me. This is followed by the pleasure of making it run to my satisfaction. After that I tend to go looking for the next toy. If my wife were to read this she would wonder why I picked today to confess.
