What is the best way to jack up a farmall M tricycle front end? I have 4 20 ton screw jacks so I have the power, I just want to know where to jack from and how.

if you are just needing to change a tire, put down some boards to drive the good one up on and pull the bad one off.

I have a piece of 12" x 14" bridge timber about two feet long that I use . With a 10 ton bottle jack under the clutch housing I got the front of my M up high enough to drop the shaft out to renew the bushings in the bolster . Come to think of it I may have had to jack up the front a little with my hi-lift jack to get the bottle jack in there solid . ...Randy

I always liked using a section of an oak log. I cut one out last weekend. It was about 16" diameter and I cut it two feet long. I had to use my ATV ramps to roll the danged thing up on the 4 wheeler.

I use this in place of a jack stand. When you let something down on this chunk of wood, it's solid! It's holding up the rear half of my Super H right now.

I've always jacked Farmalls under the "clutch housing" like Bob says.

Lock 'er up, be careful and stay completely out from underneath of that thing. If if falls, it is going to fall "down" so always be mindful of where you are at and what you are doing. Leave yourself an "out".

I've changed out front ends since I was 10 years old and 'til I'm black in the face, but always am thinking, "What if it falls RIGHT NOW?"

Unless that's well packed gravel under there I don't think I'd let it stay that way for very long . I'm guessing this was just a photo-op while you were working on changing front ends ? Basicly that's what mine looked like also except that I used a single piece of block !2" x 14" x 2' under the jack . With well chocked rear wheels and good brakes it won't go anywhere . ...Randy

Looks like a pretty good size block of wood at the bottom. I'll bet if you multiply out the number of square inches it has on the ground, the PSI under it is not all that much. Just guessing at the numbers:

12x24 inches = 288 sq inches on the ground

12000 lbs of tractor / 288 sq in = 41 PSI

Yup , Now do the reverse math - 41psi times a skull equals a crushed head or limb @ 12000lbs x terminal velocity . I never was very good at math . How much weight does it take to sever a limb ? I'm not arguin with ya cause that's the way I did too , but it's very true - DO-DO happens at the most unexpected moments . Some of us have prior experience while others don't . Some things do need the disclaimer " don't try this at home without parental supervision " . This type of lifting might be one of them . ...Randy

You scare me just looking at that way of lifting stuff or you must have the luck the Irish in your bloodline somewhere.

How's a guy supposed to sleep at night with visions of you sticking your melon under that setup??? It's official, I will volunteer to move round bales with that H of yours if it will keep me away from what I am seeing in that picture. You must lead a charmed life. (:

Hi ya Dave,

That was the point I was trying to make.

Brakes are locked. The ONLY possible direction that thing can go is DOWN. If it wants to fall, so be it. Let the darned thing fall and I'll pick it back up again.

Ya don't really think I'm dumb enough to be UNDER those tractors do ya? Geeze!

Dunno, been doing 'em this way since I was 10 years old. Never had a problem yet. :>)

Jack at the clutch housing.

For safety set and lock both brakes, then chock the BOTH rear wheels against rolling in BOTH directions before jacking.

Also for safety build a crib or platform to support the jack to maximize jack stability and minimize jack lift. (I use 2 pair of 8 x 8's about 3 feet long stacked in alternate directions...)
