I didn't want to high-jack JM's post about his Super H, so I started a new post. I've heard this term before but not real sure what the differances are between the stages. Do the changes coincide with the years produced; Stage I is a 1953 model and Stage II is a 1954 model? Can someone help shed some light on this for me

serial # 19234 and higher changes. Battery box, seat frame, rear light mount and gear shifter. almost all control rods along with some brackets and some electrical wiring. Some drilled holes in top cover eliminated. starter and clutch housing changed. front countershaft retainer and nut. Fuel tank, rear tank support. Also the fuel tank hold down springs were eliminated. Instrument panel changed to mount regulator and on off switch into cover and rear steering support holes changed. If the tractor was equiped with hydraulics a pump was mounted on engine and reservoir with relief and control valve mounted on clutch housing. Few tractors were sold without hydraulics. You can't go by battery box location 100 % of the time. IH sold hydraulic seats and battery box packages to install on H and stage 1 SH tractors. 362030 R91 for H and 362031 R91 for SH.

Also, the Super H had slightly wider gears in the transmission/rearend and slightly bigger bearings as well, I believe.

I believe they were marketed to pull the same implements as an H at a higher speed so the farmers didn't have to buy new equipment.

There are other subtle changes in the mechanicals of the engine as well - for sure a different head, thinner bearings (better heat transfer), exhaust valve rotaters, etc.

I've discovered lots of things on mine. I am in the beginning stages of restoring a 1954 SH Stage II.

I do have an 'H' for comparison but thats as close as I can get.

Mainly the 45 'H' has a c152 engine but the 54 'SH' has a c164 and about 8 to 10 (roughly)more horse power with using the over bore kit.

The carb is larger than the 45 'H' and oddly enough my governor is a little unique as well. The spring and linkage is a little different.

Transmission gearing in the 'SH' is slightly higher in 3-4-5. The 45'H' always whined horribly in road gear but the 54 'SH' always felt more solid and ran silent in any gear.

Live Hydraulics was already mentioned and of course the 'SH' has disk breaks.

The 'SH' was always much more torque'y than a standard 'H' all the way around. Although you can almost match the horse power of an 'M' but the 'M' always felt beefy'r and will out pull a SH

The most noticeable tell tale sign is the battery was moved under the seat and the hydraulic reservoir/valve is under the fuel tank.

A different fuel tank and new wrinkle in the front hood that about does it. Everything else is nicely interchangeable.

Below is a link to a couple photo's. This has been quite the adventure too. I hope to have at least a running engine before summer is out. From there I will finish off all the other odd things and then finally color it the next year.

The gearing in all in Super H and Super Ms are higher in all gears except 1st that is the same. Anouther odd note is that the fuel tank is diffent on a Stage II the outlet is further back than on the Stage I super and reg H. just my observations between the two, i have a H and my dad has a Stage II super

In addition to what Marv said, when they added live hydraulics, they had to move the battery from under the gas tank to under the seat in order to make room for the live hydraulic reservoir and valve body. Also, the grill was changed to one with two additional large holes for cultivator attachment. My super H is a late '53, #20856 J; the latest date code on it is 11-25-Y. It has the newer grill in addition to the other stage 2 characteristics. I love that ol' thing. mike

Super H"s were built for two years...1953 and 1954. Late in 1953..starting with serial number 19234, they added live hydraulics. So..everything before this is a stage I, Everything after this is a stage II. Marv

Marv,

Are you sure of this serial number break? Where did you find that. This makes mine the 29th off the line since the change. Pretty cool. I just was wondering.

Thanks!!

I'am not Marv but he is right on the serial number break. Its in the IH parts books for the Super H. Two other changes on the stage II is a side mounted three bolt starter vers a center mount two bolt on the stage ones.. Also the stage II has the serial number plate mounted horizontal instead of vertical like the stage ones. Here's a picture of my 1954 stage II super H before restoration, still in progress.

And here's a picture of my stage one 53 Super H that my dad bought new.

That appears to be a Schwartz front end and you have a lot of good there to work with.
