6 Volt - 12 Volt A

I have a 1940 A that is all set up as a 6 volt magneto system. This tractor was restored recently and now it is time to make it work rathe than just pull trailers. I have need to run an herbacide pump that powers a CDA spray head. The herbacide is pressureized from a 25 gallon tank to the applicator head by a flow jet pump that lists 12 volt 3 amp on the tag. I know there is a lot of discussion on this site about converting to 12 volt systems. I do not want to convert this and am wondering if I can run this pump from the existing 6 volt system without damage to the pump. The tank is trailer mounted and I could place a deep cycle 12 volt battery on it but would have to change batteries because we sometimes spray weeds all day. We have removed this sysyem from a 4 wheeler because this old tractor is way more comefortable and can hold a consistent speed all day.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks for all the great solutions.

Has anyone got experience with adding a alternator in addition to the generator? I would prefer to power it off of the engine.

Could be done pretty easy. I know I hooked up a power steering pump to a B I had so I could have hyds. on the tractor. If I remember right the B I had had an extra pulley that wasn't used so it was real easy to add the pump so it can be done if you have the tools to do so

If you are going to use it a lot, set up a belt driven alternator from the belt pulley or PTO.

We use our 12v pump on a deep cycle battery and it will run out at least 75 gallons of spray before needing a charge... but it sure is handy to hook up a wire to the four-wheeler and not have to charge batteries at all!

There are also reasonably priced PTO drive spray pumps on the market if you want to completely ditch the 12v pump...

Well if you don't need the PTO to run any thing rig up an alternator that runs off the PTO. That way you keep it 6 volts as far as the tractor but you can also keep a 12 volt battery charged up at the same time. It would not be very hard to make a mount for an alternator that would sit on the draw bar and would be easy to remove when your not using it.

Since the mag is a self contained system, you could put a 12 volt generator or alternator on the tractor, and change nothing else, unless you need to run the lights, in that case use 12 volt bulbs. I didn't know CDA's existed any more. Did a lot of experimenting with those as an agronomist for Kansas State University. Problem with them was that wind moved the whole spray pattern over a couple of feet.

hanks for the reply. I am going to look into hooking up a 12 v alternator for this system and any other 12 volt need.

We use a Enviromist Undevina system to control weeds between onr vinifera grapes. We only use it when weeds get too overwhelming for our mechanical cultivators.

We appreciate the responses from all

I agree with the DeepCycle battery idea. If it draws3 amp that battery will run it for quite a while. I have a Cub that I put my deep cycle trolling motor battery in when the 6 volt went bad. The gen. has not worked for uite a while, and I did not put an alt. on it. I ran it all summer before charging it, and it has run quite a bit this winter.

My friend that fishes a lot uses those deep cycle batteries. I only have a few fruit trees and I use a car 12 volt battery to run my sprayer. It works fine for me. The battery on the sprayer quit a long time ago, so I just cut the wires and spliced into them so I could use a car battery. I use the battery on my garden tractor if I have it out at times to run the sprayer. Hal
