just bought my first cub. re-wiring it and complete tune-up. took off dist. cap and cover piece over the rotor and other gear. this whole area was packed with a grease similar to bearing grease. i realize they need a little lube, but isn't this too much? thanks.

thanks for the info. i got a manual on the way. this cub is completely original, or so it seems. the harness has definitely been messed with. still 6v. it does run nice. i pulled the mag. for cleaning and got a good idea of how to put it back. if not, i'll give you a yell. thanks again.

Once you take the gears apart, you need to get them back together right. There are timing marks on them. The easiest way is to take it to a magneto shop and have them check it out and reassemble it right.

The gap is .013" on a mag. You always need to to see where the rotor is pointing before pulling a mag or distributor, then don't move the engine for any reason. Put the rotor in the same position when the mag was removed and reinstall on engine. In your case you will need to pull No1 plug near the radiator and bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Hold your thumb over the plug hole while someone hand cranks the engine. Once you feel compression keep slowly cranking until your timing marks are aligned. Turn the rotor to the No1 plug tower and install mag. Hal

Remember he's had the internal gears apart so they must be timed as well.

I hope he's looking at those gears to see how they're meshed. Hal

after removing all that grease, i found a crack in the cover that goes over the dist. shaft gear and the rotor. the crack is all the way through the cover. it started at a screw hole. and yes i noted where the timing marks are on the rotor and shaft gear. don't you guys go nowhere. no doubt i'll have more questions for you. you have been a great help. thanks.

my little operators book didn't show up yet. so i'll ask this one. what is the function of the 3 or 4 position switch next to amp and on/off push/pull switch. my decals are missing, and what position should this be in while running. thanks.

If you have a part from that cultivator with the blue paint still on it your local auto paint store could probably come close with a match. Here are some PPG paint codes on blue paint. I would look at the paint chips to see which color
would come close. Did you install the distributor? I remembered those coils were installed horizontal. Hal

Be sure to mark the old wires as to where they were connected. Remember to see where the rotor is pointing before pulling the mag & don't move the engine. Hal
