I know I used heat to pull mine but I was also replacing the top seal of the hand pump that was leaking anyway. I had the gear puller on tight with a lot of tension. Within seconds of putting the torch up to the outside of the steering wheel hub, it popped free. That was quick enough not to heat the shaft, etc. up. Having the puller under tension while heating helps from applying too much heat but you still have to be careful with rubber parts nearby.

The wax will seep down in between the shaft and wheel.

Heating the hub and shaft up enough to melt candle wax won't hurt the seals on the hand pump...

I would not recomment heat as the seals in the hand pump right below the steering wheel will not like it very much.

Look to see if there are some threaded holes on either side of the shaft. If those holes are there, a steering wheel puller is what you need. Just the same as you would use on an older car or truck.

Yep if it is the origional steering wheel it will have the 2 puller holes. Use hard grade bolts for the puller bolts though. I have been thru this.

If the gear puller doesn't work right away, heat up the steering wheel hub just enough to let some candle wax seep between the hub and the shaft. Then try the puller again.

Hi, what does the candle wax do? Does it tell you when the hub is hot enough or is it some type of lube? And if it lubes the shaft, then why wouldn't spraying more wd-40 on if after apply heat work? Thanks

I used a 3 jaw gear puller, worked great and does not abuse wheel or steering.

i used a mini airhammer. unloosen the nut, but dont take it off. have someone pull on the wheel while you use the hammer on the nut. it will come right off, without maring it up with the puller. pg
