I am going to take my magneto off to prep for paint. I waas wondering what the best way to make sure it is top dead center. I know on Chevy"s guys get them 180 off and they don"t even backfire. Also when I take my governor off to prep behind it, is there any precasutions before I take it off? So What do I have to do to tke The mag off and get it put back in right later?

If the mag is timed right and the engine runs good just make 2 matching punch marks 1 on the mag &1 on the part it bolts up to. P ut it back on and if it won't start, take it off and turn it 180 degrees & install. I usually turn the engine to get all sides of the pully painted. I don't worry about getting them running again.

You can pull your mag or distributor off the engine, but you need to see where the rotor is pointing before you pull it. Then don't move the engine for any reason while the mag is off. When you're finished painting turn the rotor in the same position and install on the engine. I would make a sketch and don't move the engine. Hal
PS: You can put a dab of fingernail polish where the rotor is pointing & just a small dab on the rotor so you have the right end of the rotor.

If you do not know what you are doing, you best leave gov. alone. The mag is easy, turn engine so it is on #1 cylinder, TDC on compression stroke, take cap off, make sure rotor is on #1 on cap, make a mark in mag there, take out, don't turn engine or mag, then put back the way it came off. It only goes back in right or 180 out.

Governor doesnt matter except the linkage to the carb, if your just removing the mag, thers only two ways it can go on, right and wrong. Just pop off the cap and mark where the rotor is pointing. Install with the rotor pointing to the mark.

If you don't know how to get it back in time you better not take it off. That is my advice.

This is good advice. You will undoubtedly turn it and mess up the timing.

You can, however learn how to time one but it seems a tall hill for some folks.

IH did not paint behind them when it was new.

JT is right on the money .... "The mag is easy, turn engine so it is on #1 cylinder, TDC on compression stroke, take cap off, make sure rotor is on #1 on cap, make a mark in mag there, take out, don't turn engine or mag, then put back the way it came off.
