F-30 piston/sleeve pics - Bad news

I actually got the F-30 pistons and sleeves in the shop today and began a little preliminary cleaning. At least 2 of the sleeves are unusable due to pitting, and the pistons are almost worse. An uncle looked at'em and told me to hone the sleeves and put new rings in an put it all back together. To me, it'd never develop enough compression to start.

There is at least one more option if you don't find any good replacements ,you can bore that sleeve and install a dry liner inside it . I bave been doing that for the old continental diesels for many years.

If you can get better ones, GREAT! If you're stuck with these, try Egge Machine (egge.com). They specialize in parts for "obsolete" engines. If they can't help, try talking to a few chrome plating shops or airplane parts places. They can actually build-up the material in the cylinder and then hone it back to factory diameter. They can also put down a layer of hard chrome inside the cylinder. You use soft cast-iron rings with this. Always put a soft metal next to a hard one in situations like this. If you hard-chromed the cylinders, they would last virtually forever. You'd just have to replace the rings on the next rebuild (probably not in your lifetime!). Of course, hard chroming the cylinder walls is Very pricy. But...

I'd try honing the sleeves. Don't try to get all the pitting out, that would remove too much material. They won't be perfect but I think they will pass. The pistons are junk.

NO! Do not re-use those sleeves/pistons. That is a awful lot of pitting! If you honed it and put it together again, it would most likely not have any compression and then you'd have to take it all apart again. Fix it while its apart.

Ummm, given how funky that is I recommend you change them.
How bad are the rest of your sleeves? If they are pitted as deep as that you wil lose compression or worse, break a ring as the parts expand from heating up.

I showed them to a friend who does a lot of motor work on old Farmalls, and he said I'd only get the thing to start with a chain if I used these sleeves and pistons. Nebraska Cowman says he's got some, so I'm going to talk to him.

They do look a little rough. Given the availability of new parts, you might use electrolysis to get the rust off, then hone and mic the fits. The old engines turn pretty slow, and it will probably smoke. You may have to have the pistons knurled.

Remember though that rust occupies 67 times the volume of steel, so 0.001 turned to rust is 1/16 thick so lots of stuff cleans up a lot better than you'd think.
