I have a 1965 maybe IH backhoe loader tractor. It has the six cylinder engine with shuttle transmission and four speed.

I have a leak at the swing trunion. There is a big seal at the top of the pinion shaft and an O ring at the bottom of the pinion shaft. I recently replaced the seal and the bottom tapered bushings but still have a leak. I think maybe the bushings are worn and letting the O ring come away from the shaft. I can't see how to remove the big pinion shaft from the swing trunion housing so I can repair the bushing/s and the seals. It appears that the big steel busing that contains the upper bronze bushing and the seal on top must be pressed out of the trunion housing before the pinion can be removed.

Anybody know for sure how to fix this or where I might find a repair manual or parts breakdown for reference???

Thanks, Zane

Hi, first everyone will want to know what the model number is, etc. The ID plate should be on the side towards the top on the clutch housing. I suspect that would be the minimum before someone can help you. Other than this, I don't know for sure what a swing trunion is so I can't help anymore with that.

I have a 60's model IH backhoe loader. No ID plate but I believed it was a 606 or 2606 with gas and now I am leaning towards it being a 2656. I am slowly working through a number of issues with it. I have the model number for the backhoe attachment though. Mine has a 5 speed but I'm not even sure what a shuttle transmission is. I know it has a forward and reverse lever though.
