Well, we recently had a hold in the liner and are re-building our tractor. Someone on another forum told me that your not supposed to put antifreeze in these tractors. I had never heard that before. Can you let me know what is correct?

F250gal: That guy on the other forum is full of bannanas. If I recall the manuals said not to run them without antifreeze. I farmed in a area where we regularly saw -20 to -30 temps. Lot of dairy farms and probably the two biggest selling tractors IH had during the 70s were the 766 and 886. Our dealer sold a wack of those.

Thanks, I knew that guy was wrong. Going to run some premixed stuff so we dont end up with the hard water in our area, THANKS Again

F250gal: I presume cavitation was the culpert, just going by your concerns. Does the tractor have a water filter, that won't eliminate cavitation, but does slow it down. Also check IH specs, some antifreezes are better for that system than others. It's been awhile, thus I don't remember those.

Which engine does your 886 have. Early ones had the American built IH 360, and later they used the German built IH 358. I was always quite a firm believer in the American engines, one could hardly call me impartial. Here in eastern Canada we got a lot of European diesels, all makes. In the beginning they were not climatized very well for our cold winter starting. It tended to be something one never forgot.

It is a 360, and cavitation was the culprit. The problem is that this tractor sits between seasons, and I guess the hard water just got to it. Going to put a mix in this time, that was recommended by IH. It is going together today and tomorrow, should be back in the fields by the weekend.

F250gal, I have an 886 with the 360 also, it did the same with less than 5000 hrs. Mine doesn't sit around. I think the best defense is to change the coolant filter at least once a year, I negleted it before, hope for better now. Good luck, Chuck
