My SMTA is serial 66898 AS. What does the A and S mean? Thanks.

S means TA with provision for independent PTO. A means distillate engine. That makes it somewhat unusual -- you might make sure that it is indeed an A. Supposedly kerosene and distillate engines were available through the 450. I don't think there was much distillate for sale in 1954, could be wrong.

I think it is a legit distillate. The reason I was asking is I posted earlier (page 5 on here now) that I thought it was one because it had the little starter tank and the hole in the hood for the little tank was perfectly round and not chopped out. It also has the pivot arms just behind the radiator for radiator shutters too. Someone removed the shutters and the control/linkages though. The manifold appears to be the hot kind. I bet the old head is low-compression too. What casting number should the head be?

You answered the question -- I don't have a SMTA or manual. Look at www.caseih.com for the head part number, or someone else will have the answer. The distillate version is somewhat unusual for that late a tractor. I think most of those were for export, obviously some stayed in the US for whatever reason.

No many, but a few distillate tractors through and including the Farmall 450 were sold in the Mississippi Delta.

Thank you so much for the information. This has been an interesting tractor to look into. I am not familiar at all with this model so this information is great. I wonder how many were built distillate?

Another thing that I am looking into is the fact that the torque controls were missing from the tractor. According to the S it should have the torque. I advertised for the handle and things in the classified here, but a nice guy informed me some did not have the TA. That got me worried it might be missing. I am ignorant about the TA. Is it under the plate that is basically under the starter and under the tank?

By the way, it has live PTO.

The handle and linkage is the same as a farmall 400 tractor. If you want it to look original only the early 400 tractors used the same T/A lever with the guides made on handle for the pawl rod.
