Could I run a rototiller effectively on my 300U? I am thinking it doesn't go slow enough.

I run a 72 inch Land Pride tiller on my 300U. We use low gear and have to throttle down or we are continually breaking shear pins. Works good and does not go to fast, the tractor is heavy enough to hold the tiller to its work and bite really good...6 to 8 inches easily.

Hi,

I was hoping to use a 72 inch Land Pride reverse rotation tiller on a Farmall M. Infact, I have been looking at getting an MD with a TA, because I was told that a M would not have enough power and it would go to fast. Yet, you are running a 72 tiller with a 300U. So, I don't think an M should have a problem as far as power. Just wondering if someone could compare the ground speed of an M and 300U in first gear. I would think the M would go much faster having bigger tires, but I am not really sure.

Thanks!

I have a fast hitch Howard 5' tiller that I purchased at an estate sale. It was formerly driven with a 300U or 350U.

1st TA with 10(11.2)-28 tires is 1.6 mph, 1st high is 2.4, according to Guy Fay's data book. I do not have a 300U, but I have heard of rototillers on TA equipped tractors. A more common tire size for the 300U is likely 11(12.4)-28, which will be a little faster.

The issue is not so much speed, but the TA allows the tractor to be driven forward by the action of the tiller. If it has no TA, it probably does go too fast in 1st. Many people have no problem doing several increasingly deep passes, but it is a decision to make. I have also thought of putting a pair of sweeps in front of the tiller (drawbar mounted) that would provide forward resistance?

Yes, I forgot about the rototiller pushing the TA. I once drove a 444 which has a Hi-Lo 8 speed, not a TA. At times the tiller would push that tractor also. It could be due to how hard the soil is. My guess is they are ok in soft ground.
