There is an item listed on ebay called a "Howard Speed Reducer".

The listing claims that it is for a Farmall Cub.

Here is one of the pictures he listed of it:

I know that this one is for a Cub, but I am wondering if this thing is somewhat like the one you were talking about the other day?

Thanks
Bruce

One of those speed reducers went for $600 at an auction I attended year and a half ago. It is a planetary gear set. The housing didn't look too strong.

If you go to the Farmall Cub site, several people have made the point that the reducer is only meant to slow down the tractor. It can't be used to amplify torque without breaking the left hand final drive. Apparently the upper shaft (pinion shaft) will shear.

It looks like a lousy piece of engineering. When in low range, the differential spider is in constant motion. They don't have the bearings for that kind of abuse.

But what the heck. People who work Cubs are used to repairing them.

You remove the left final drive and it goes on the tranny then the final drive bolts to the speed reducer. It reduces ground speed 1/3. It will be interesting to see what it brings i knew one fellow said money wasnt the problem he just wanted one.

Bruce Interesting, I don't follow Cubs very closely. I think the Cub PTO is around 1,000 RPM, this could be the device designed to give 540 RPM PTo on a Cub. K-Mo mentioned this couple days back on my initial thread about what turned out to be the Ray Bock Creeper gear. I'll bet he can tell you.

Hugh, the RPM article is by Jim Becker, who posts on this forum. The unit attaches as Gene says and has a lever to use as either regular ground speed or reduced speed. The unit does not affect PTO speed. As Keith says, PTO speed on the Cub is the same as engine speed, up to 1600 rpm on the original Cub. Jim Becker also said that a couple of companies made PTO conversions for the Cub which changed the rotation and reduced the speed. One was J.R Prewitt, the other was Hub City. Hub City is still in business but no longer makes the conversion for the Cub. Those who get Red Power magazine can find the article on P 37 of the May-June 2005 issue. Jim is an excellent writer.

Hugh, both my owners manual and service manual for the Cub,says the pto speed(CCW rotation) is the same as engine speed.HTH
