I would like to remove the heat damper "flapper" from my distillate manifold. I was wondering if there is a pin of sorts to hold the shaft in the flapper or is it a press fit. The parts book I have shows an external collar and pin with a straight flapper. The one in my manifold is L shaped and has no external collar. Manifold is part no 6712DB. I just don't want to break anything. Thanks in advance.

I would keave it alone. If you have a manifold with a working heat valve you are very fortunate. I have a distillate SH and have been going to great lengths to salvage the manifold. I think you will find the cast iron to be marginal for welding from the inside. I had a crack welded from the outside on mine and after a little dressing with the grinder it is not noticeable. The key is to find someone who knows how to weld cast iron. I had mine butchered by a "pro" before I found the right guy. The valve is pinned but even if you get the pin out I think you will find it difficult the drive the shaft out of the valve without breaking something. As others have sai, these hot box castings are fragile.

No the flapper is free and working, but there is a small hairline crack up the side. Thought it would look better welded from the inside, but maybe it isn't worth taking the chance of breaking it. John

I wouldn't do it. Those things break rather easy. I tried on mine, but now I've ended up with a shiny new one :)

Kind regards

The flapper in mine was in bad shape so I just took a hammer and punch and broke it off.
Those manifolds get weak and thin, be careful

bet you can pay for almost two gasoline manifolds for the price you could get for your working distillate one.
