I just purchased a 1942 farmall with hydraulics is this rare or just an after market set up?

Ray, sounds like it is just an after market add on. Lots of A's and B's have had similiar set ups put on them. I have seen a few with power steeing pumps from cars/trucks put on them, and they will work pretty good.

Depends on what kind of hydraulics. Lots of aftermarket setups that attached to the PTO, and homebrews that ran off belt pulleys, fan belts etc.

One thing for sure: a '42 Farmall A did not come from the factory with hydraulics.

ITS A BOX THAT SITS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF TRACTOR
RUNS OFF A FAN BELT AND HAS A CONTROL VALVE LEFT SIDE OF SEAT . NOT PO RELATED SE DATES BACK TO 1942 A 80913 SO THATS WHY I'M CONFUSED

Sounds like a homebrew. But, don't let that put you off, I've seen some pretty good homemade hydraulic setups.

Do you have the serial number? An A may have hydraulics if the engine was changed for some reason with an engine from the Super A, C or Super C. Some of the A's had an exhaust lift.
