What is the best tractor for me?

I asked for some info on a previous post, but I need some more help. I currently have a 706 & I need to get a snow plow to throw the snow (pushing & stacking no longer working with the drifts). From my research on YT, I have found that the 706 may not be the best option for a snow blower. I also need to have a front end loader for other jobs. What are some recommendations on the best tractor for me?

GG I also would think a 706 would work good for a snowblower. The only problems I can think of is maybe your tractor doesn't have a 3 pt hitch, or 1000 rpm pto. If it has a fast hitch, that could be converted in several ways to hook up to a modern rear snow thrower. If it has a 540 pto, just get a 540 pto thrower. I don't know, maybe you don't have either one on your tractor?

A 706 should work perfectly for everything you want to do with it... just get the equipment that is sized for it.

I have a 756 and use a IH # 80 snowblower .It handles it good. The thing I noticed is that it will blow the snow better at about 1800 rpms than at full throttle because the ground speed gets to fast. The lane does not fill in as deep either when using a blower because you don't leave ridges on both sides of the drive. If I hit a hard spot the 756 will spin with one tire until the blower empties the I tap the spinning wheels brake and off we go again.

GG: If your 706 wont plow your snow with angle blade or loader, you have problems. 706 with good wheel chains will probably push as much snow as any 2 wheel drive tractor ever built. Basically the same chassis as a 1466 with less weight up front.

If that don't work, here are some suggestions, 966 Cat loader, Articulated tractor, Road Grader, FWD truck. Having said that, here's betting if I started at first snowfall, I could plow your snow with my Farmall 130 and 6' angle blade. Don't call me a dreamer, I have plowed snow with Graders, Articulated tractors and construction loaders. One thing I learned plowing snow, quite often the bigger they are the harder they fall.

Hugh,
Our road district has a Cat 928F wheel loader, it is a small one, weights about 30K. When my dad was the road commisioner, he put chains on all 4 tires, had a 12ft one way funnell blade on it, I have been pushed into the ditch more than once with that unit. Also, the bigger they are, the deeper they get stuck!!! >)

Jim: Road ditches tend to be soft, that being where the consentration of water is. I've had more than a few anxious moments with that old Champion grader. (300 hp Cummins) What I was plowing were logging roads, head out in the middle of the night to meet log truckers, plow their way miles into the bush. Plow a turning place then stay with them until they were loaded, to make sure no one was in trouble. Roads with 15' tops, and if I didn't plow right where the road was, then it was a log truck down in the mud. Those guys were hard to pull if loaded.

That is strange, our road district had a Champion grader at one time, but it had an Allis Chalmers diesel engine in it. they are kinda rare around here as I think they were made up in Canada. That engine was about useless, but it had a lot of hours on it.

Jim: Champion are actually built not very far from here. They used a wide variety of engines over the years. It's owned by Volvo now, so very likely they are using Volvo engines. In fact the name on the grader today is Volvo.

GG, Don't know what research you are referring to, but in my opinion a 706 will be excelent for either a blower or loader. The only thing to add is a cab is nice for a blower, but a windbreaker will help too, Good luck, Chuck
