I just completed a restoration on an F-12, 34 model and noticed a lot of frame twist when turning. Is this normal for these tractors or is something i can do. It's going to cause the radiator to hood bolts to wear bad. Thanks for any help, Ken.

I've got an F-14 and two F-12's and I have not noticed any frame twist. I would check that you have all of the necessary bolts in their proper place and that they are the correct length. The 5 bolts that hold each of the frame rails to the transmission housing have to be real tight. There are two vertical bolts on each side of the steering bolster that need to be checked for length and tightness. There are also two horizontal bolts at the front of the frame rails on each side that screw into the steering bolster that need to be checked for tightness and the correct length. As others have said, it sounds like some of the bolts are not making tight enough contact to hold things together.

My 35 F-12 doesn"t appear to twist, at least it if does it is so little I never noticed it or seen any wear at the mounting points for hood or radiator. Just a thought here, but are the brakes working right and adjusted right? On those the brakes work when turning, kind of a primitive power steering assist. If they aren"t working right, it may put stress on the frontend especially on sharp turns. There are rods that go from arms uner the front end that acuate the brakes. Make sure those are free and or even there. They sometimes wear out on the ends also.

On open Chanel frames, the primary torsion resistance is the bolting into the castings. If these ar at all loose, or the threads are abused and torquing does not result in proper pinching of the frame, there will be twist. I would pull bolts (one at a time) and make sure they are correctly pinching the frame. Others may be more objective, My experience is with an Alis Chalmers WD. JimN
