TD-6 vs. TD-9

Wow, so I bought my TD-6 about a week ago. I've always loved the little crawlers.
So I got the itch and started on my quest for a Be-Ge pump and ran over to my local used tractor dealer today after work and saw he had 2 TD-9s! Wow, I sorta wished I had a TD-9 instead. What kind of HP advantage does a TD-9 have over a TD-6?

I mostly liked the wider stance and tracks on them. He was asking WAY too much for them (I think) considering the bushings were about worn through, the tracks were very worn (less than half the grouses) and extremely loose, and the rear drive looked about like saw blade. He was asking $4000...

You would have loved the MMOGTA show a couple years back when they featured crawlers. There was a TD-? there which looked just like a TD-6 with a BE bullgrader. Only difference was it was the size of a small house. Awesome machine.

Sheldon,
I didn't realize you were interested in TD9's. Besides the blade I have 2 TD9s in pieces. I have put together several tractors from parts but I ran out of steam on these TD9s. In short, I am also trying to unload some basket cases.

Funny thing is, Bill... I didn't realize I was interested in TD-9's either until I saw one (which I mistook for a wide track TD-6 and was quickly corrected by the dealer).

You could have gotten a good deal on a TD25 dozer at an auction I went to last month. it went for $9000 and needed nothing but a monster lowboy trailer to get it moved. Had rebuilt engine, tracks, radiator and the sweetest homemade stainless steel muffler you ever saw! He spent over $5000 on just engine parts, not counting the rad or tracks and never used it again. Thing really purred nice and I saw no leaks anywhere in the hydraulics. The owner said there wasn"t a tree anywhere that would slow it down!

Both the TD-6 and the TD-9 were available in a wide tread model. Perhaps the 6 you have is a standard width model and the 9"s you saw were the wide model. At any rate the 9's are somewhat bigger and about 3000 pounds heavier, example for 1953, TD-6 standard 7557 pounds, 52 5/8" overall width, 104" overall length, standard 12" track shoe width. TD-6 wide gauge 5663 pounds, 62 5/8" overall width, 104" overall length, standard 12" track shoe width. TD-9 standard gauge 10,448 pounds, 59" overall width, 114" overall length, standard 13" track shoe width. TD-9 wide gauge 10,608 pounds, 75" overall width, 114" overall length, 13" standard track shoe width.

Interesting, the track shoe width is the same for the standard and the wide gauge?

The tracks on the 9 I saw seemed a whole lot wider than just 1". Eyes are deceiving me as I get older I guess.

Many different track shoe styles and widths were available, but, 12" was standard on boyh narrow and wide gauge TD-6,13" was standard on both narrow and wide gauge TD-9, 16" was standard on TD-14, 20" was standard on TD-18, and 22" was standard on TD-24.

Sheldon, there is quite a difference in the TD9's during the years of their production. For example, the original models had various 4 cylinder versions and then moved into various 6-cylinder variants over the years so it kind of depends what year and model you are talking about HP wise. The TD6 also had a few versions over the years, they are both capable crawlers when operated and maintained correctly it just depends what you want to do with them.

Oh, I understand that. I was just commenting on the fact that I liked the stance and look of the 9 a bit better than the 6. But I bought my TD-6 only a week ago now and it's in way too good of condition for me to consider looking for an out-of-shape TD-9 in it's place.

Now, if I come across a deal on a 9 like I found on this 6... Yea, I've the the itch already!

If you are talking the old semi diesels 1950's TD-6 is 38 belt hp same engine as the MD. The TD-9 was 46 belt hp.

Well I can't say much but the TD-6 is around 56HP from what I have been told and the TD-9 is about 75HP plus the 9 is half again heavier then the 6
