I am looking at a 656 to blow snow & move round bales. Is this a good tractor for what I am looking at using it for? Any pro's & con's I should know about?

rustin said: (quoted from post at 16:30:07 01/02/08) I talked with the seller & he said that the engine was thouroughly gone thru about 10 years ago & had new sleeves & pistons put in & the hydro was serviced at that time as well.

The hydro was serviced or rebuilt? We had a 656 gas hydro - a darn good and handy tractor, but that gasser mated to a hydro is one heck of a fuel hog! Also, a hydro is very poor for any heaving pulling/tillage work. Hydro is great for mowing, raking, loader work, etc.

The only trouble we ever had with ours was that the hydro was getting weak around 6500 hours and a cam lobe was bad, causing a valve to burn out... and of course the fuel consumption!

Is the one you're looking at gas or diesel? How many hours since rebuild? How is the tin? Beat up tin is usually a sign of how the innards of the tractor were cared for as well... beautiful tin is also a sign that the owner was proud of his equipment and took good care of the service items...

Horses teeth actually get shorter with age since the grind the grass between their teeth.

What are some good things to test and look for when evaluating a 656 for purchase? How is it done as well?

Thanks,

Joe

They are an excellent tractor with no known issues. Will work great for you.

"Only" limiting factor would be the length of the tooth.

Gas engines are good for about 5,000 hours and the diesel will usually make it to 10,000 before they need to be tended to.

Also, if you plan on moving the bales with a rear mover, you might want to find a rack of front end weights. They are a bit light in the front with a heavy load on the back.

Thanks for the response Allen. Not to sound stupid, but what do you mean by the length of the tooth. What specifically should I ask the seller? Thanks again & I have always respected you advice & knowledge.

By "Long in the Tooth" Allan means the age of the tractor. 656 was manufacturered in the late '60s and early '70s.

I grew up around a 656 that my grand father bought new and is still in the family. I also purchased my own 656 a few years ago. 656 is a good tractor.

You might start by asking the seller if the tractor has had any work done to it in the last few years (read Allan's post above about engine hours relative to engine overhaul).

Length of tooth? In a horse long teeth are a sign of age. A 656 was made when- 40 years ago? RN

Long in the tooth? Never heard the term used around horses- most often it is used to evaluate girls in bars - especially very late at night. I guess in horses it would indicate that the teeth are fine but the gums are gone - old age.
