Model M Foot Starter Switch

Twice now I have fatigued the thin metal contactor inside the foot switch on my Model M 1949 and busted it in half and consequently grounded it out. Has anyone experimented with an alternative starting switch? I guess my big heavy foot is pushing too hard on the switch and pushing harder makes it start better, right?! Sometimes I'm just not too smart. By the way, I've just been picking them up at the local Fleet Farm-I'm not buying the OEM parts. Thanks in advance.

A solenoid relay makes really positive contact, and is a good way to make this thing work great IF you don't mind the slightly unoriginal look.
If I were using one of these tractors all the time and had any trouble with the original switches, I'd go for a waterproof pushbutton mounted up on the light bar and put a solenoid down under somewhere out of sight. I remember when Ford had a pushbutton starter about 1940, and everybody raved about how easy it was to use.
Other cars used switches very similar to the one on the H and M, and they always required a fair amount of effort, AND they eventually burned the contacts when people sometimes didn't push hard enough--an arc would start across the contacts and in time they would become black and non-conductive.

Theres a long one and a short one. I have been using the short one in all three of my Ms for years with the foot switch. Id say your just pushing it down too hard.

I"ve been through some of this, also. I went through three switches before I realized that the lever on my M was pushing the starter switch sideways almost as much as it was pushing it forward. The first switch gave up in the manner you describe. On the second, the cap came loose. On the third, I noticed the entire barrel of the switch was bent upward where it mounted on the base. The common after-market "Made in Mexico" or somewhere-else-type switches don"t seem to be nearly as tough as the originals.

the oem switch is prolly a lot heavier considering how long they last. otherwise you can get a solenoid and a push button switch. the ford solenoids work pretty good. one of my m's is a 12v conversion, it has a push button with a ford solenoid. try napa for a solenoid.
