This post is in regards to Nebraska Kirk's post dated December 11, 2007 "Good News and Bad News": I have questions for Nebraska Kirk about his PS installation, but if anyone else out there has knowledge and can answer my questions, feel free to respond also.

NE. Kirk, I am preparing to do a similar installation on my SMTA and noticed that you show in one of your photos a brace or support mounted from the Behlen unit to the M's steering post. Is that brace a Behlen product?...or did you buy it elswhere?...or did you build it yourself/have it made? If it is not a Behlen porduct, could you give me the measurements on it so I could try to fabricate one myself? BTW, why does the brace have a slot on the Behlen unit end instead of just a hole? Is that so it can be adjusted?..or is it for ease of installation/removal? Also, my hydraulic pump is located the same as yours, in front of the distributor, but I think mine is an original IH pump, which means I will need to install a "flow divider/proportioning valve" according to the comments made on your post, right? Knowing very little, if anything about hydraulics, and after looking at the Northern Tool flow divider valves, I see that the valve with 1/2" NPT ports is adjustable from 0 to 16 GPM and the valve with 3/4" NPT ports is acdjustable from 0 to 30 GPM. Nothing is said about the PSI rating being adjustable. Does that change automatically when the GPM is changed? (See, I told ya I know little or nothing about hydraulics!)

I am not trying to restore the tractor, just resurrecting it to make it presentable and usable. The SMTA is now stripped down and being painted and as soon as I can get it back home and in my shop, the PS unit will be one of the first projects I will tackle. Along with the live hydraulics and PS, it also has independent PTO, 3 pt hitch, 12V alternator with electronic ignition and a Farmhand F-11 loader.

Thanks in advance for your response and any others who would like to help me with good advice. Looking forward to hearing from y'all!

Thanks a bunch for the pictures and dimensions! They will help alot!!!

I can build something that will work now. Your help and efforts are most appreciated!

Although I may be able to find a Behlen bracket somewhere, sometime, I am sure that if they are no longer made, the seller would want an arm and a leg for it! I need both my legs and both my arms and I can now build one that will work just fine, quicker and probably much cheaper. Thanks again!

Here is the first picture of the Home Made Behlen Power Steering bracket that you asked about.

This one is from a different view of it.

It was made from 1/4" Thick by 1 1/4" Wide flat bar stock, and held together with two rivets.

If you think they are helpfull to your setup just save them to your PC and then you can enlarge them so you can see/read the measurments.

It was once installed on a Farmall M, but I am going to put the setup on a H.

If you want an orginal type Behlen bracket like Wardner's picture displayed you can post a wanted ad here, check with salavge places, or ebay, one show's up there every now and then.

Good Luck, you will enjoy being able to steer with one or two fingers once it's completed.

Pictures would be great! Thanks alot! And give me a measurement or two so I can get an idea of the size of the bracket, if you would! Thanks again! Idaho Boy

I can't really help you with what I assume is an adjustable Prince flow control valve even though I put one on another tractor. I can't even remember why I put it on my 504.

Anyway, the flow control valve you see in this picture is contemporary with the Behlen set up. It is used with a distributor driven pump on a SMTA. Copy the picture and send it off to some salvage yards. The 'T' to left of the valve is extra. It is the return from a three spool valve bank

The bracket is Behlen material. It does not appear in any IH parts books.

Hoses are

1 o'clock = power from pump

6 o'clock = pressure to Liftall

9 o'clock = return from remote valve bank and Behlen

11 o'clock = power to steering

Fat hose is feed to pump

I may be wrong, but I belive that the valve that Wardner is showing limits the pressure going to the steering motor to be set to operate at around 1,000psi, any psi rating much higher than that may bust/rupture the steering motor.

This valve is listed & shown in one of my Behlen Power Steering Manuals. I don't know if a new one can be bought or not.

Behlen did make a pump that was used for their power steering units. It is a #201. It is rated at 3.25gpm, and set to operate at about 1,000psi. This info also is listed in the manual.

My dad and I put a Char-Lynn motor on a Super M that was equipped with a factory pump about 5 or 6 years ago (your SMTA should be about the same).

He installed a "Adjustable Flow Control Valve" set to operate at 3 or 4gpm, lile this one:

He then installed a "In-Line Hydraulic Relief Valve" beyond/after the flow valve on the line going to the steering motor to control the pressure it received.

It has three ports. #1 is for the incomming oil, #2 goes to the steering motor, #3 is a return line that allows the oil that is over the set limts to return to the holding tank. It looks something like this one:

Dad has since passed, but that setup has worked great since we installed it.

Sure wish I had paid more attention to everyday things he tried to teach or show me.

The bracket Wardner shows was also made by Behlen, but you may be able to make one up. I have one that dad made for the setup for my H.

I can try to get some pictures of it if you would like and post them for you tomorrow.

A link to the hydraulic valves Norhtern sells is below:

Maybe this info can help you in some way.

The set up on the tractor works and I have seen it duplicated on many more. The tractor can be steered with a couple of fingers.

The valve probably has a restriction on the port that goes to the Behlen. I believe you are right about the spring loaded relief on that circuit. It limits PS energy to about 1000 lbs. Not sure if the denied oil goes to the reservoir or to the inlet of the Liftall. Your set up will also work but the one old valve will do the job of both of your valves. It will be alot cheaper as well.

There is something that has not been mentioned. The aftermarket Behlens are different than the units purchased by IH for the 400-450. The input shaft is several inches longer and is machined for the steering wheel. A welder can fix that 'short coming'.
