I recently ask for information and shortcuts to changing the rear main engine seal on a 1680 combine with a Cummins engine and received some good and helpful advice. Thanks to all who responded. Now I have to get a little deeper into the combine as the grain table has holes worn in the bottom from the augers as the wood block bearings are shot. Any shortcuts to getting the grain table and related components out of the combine? It looks like everything needs to come out the back. But as this will be a first for me any help is appreciated. Thanks

the best way to get to the auger bed is to remove head and throat, from combine. then it easyer to work on the auger bed it most likly be better to replace the bed as to repair if you plan on keeping the machine. the wood block on end of shaft is some sorta special wood whitch has been pre soaked in oil or been put under pressure to inbead oil. i removed and replace set of auger bed in a jd. some years ago they came out the front . replaced a front axle on a 1440 this fall so it look to me like the auger beds come ot the fron on the ih also.

If you are refering to the metal troughs for the augers under the rotor i would not take them out to rebuild.

I would have a half moon piece of metal made up and roll it under the auger without removing the auger. Then tack in into place over the top of the old tin with a welder.

Yes, it is the tray under the set of five augers. The two outside and center augers have wore thru the metal tray. I had considered installing sheet metal but getting to the center auger area is going to be extremely difficult. I am also concerned about a fire when welding inside the combine. Considered using pop riviets to retain the repair panels. I would still need to replace the front wood block bearings inside the machine as well as repair / replace the augers. Have you ever welded new tubing to the end of the augers that would ride in the wood blocks.

We replaced the wood blocks with a bearing kit that the Case-IH dealership has. If I remember right, there was a small shaft that went INSIDE in auger shaft. Not 100% sure though. It has been several years ago. This was the first year we had to replace a bearing, while we replaced the wood blocks every couple years. The kit was more expensive. We made our own wood blocks. Even put grease zerks in one set, didn't seem to help much. I don't know if the augers run to fast to wear out the wood.

If the fliting is not wore out I would consider welding new ends on the shafts. If the fliting is shot replace the whole auger. If you do weld on an end make sure it is straight before welding.

Vacuum all the dust out and keep a hose handy and welding those pans in would work.
