what is the correct way to mount the rear steel wheels on the f12? I've seen them mounted both ways (lugs in and out) How did they mount them from the factory?
Thanks guys

Since I wrote my previous note, I've had time to dig around and find a couple of early IHC brochures. One has to be from 1938, because it shows an F-14 on steel. The hubs are definitely on the outside. The other brochure is probably from about 1936 (most of the tractors are on steel, but there are a few on rubber, but only with the little knobs that seem to have been the only kinds of "lugs" available when rubber first became commonly available around the middle 30s. The F-12 pictured on steel has the hubs outside, and even the tractor pictured on round-spoked wheels has the hubs out. My father had a '38 on rubber with the factory cast-iron wheels, and I am pretty sure its hubs were on the inside. The wheels were dished out a bit and I am pretty sure I remember that they were "clean" on the outside. The dishing would have allowed their being turned the other way around to give a fairly-narrow tread. It's been almost 50 years since this pretty little thing was in service, so my fading memory cannot be blamed entirely on disappearing brain cells.

Another picture in the earlier brochure shows an F-12 with the hubs out and the wheels WAY in, pulling a lister through some very narrow rows of something.
Well, I had fun looking.

Don't know if it helps or not, but here are pics of our F14 on cutoffs and F12 on steel:

This was one of the early tractors to have the wheels slide in and out on the axles. It wasn't the first (Oliver HP Row-Crop might have been the first, but I don't have any way to verify that). With the hubs IN and the wheels all the way out, there would probably be a certain amount of strain on the axles if a heavy load were pulled. However, these were VERY sturdy axles, and I imagine they were more than strong enough to handle any load the tractor could pull(I worked several F-12s for probably 15 years all told, and I can testify that they were really built strong).
I don't have access to any pictures at the moment, but the two pictures of both the F-12 and the F-14 on steel, in Wendel's Nebraska Tractor Tests, show the tractors with the hubs OUT. I am pretty sure I have seen these pictures in IHC brochures from the 30s. In this configuration, the wheels could probably give a very narrow tread if necessary, because the supports to the spokes have a bit of a "dish" to them. With the hubs out, you would probably still have a good range of adjustments for various row crops.

I think you might be confusing "lugs" with "hubs". The lugs are mounted on the rims and alternate around the perimeter. The hubs that fasten the wheels to the axles can be mounted either in or out. I think from the factory they were mounted "out". Even the sales brochures and flyers show them out. In some instances, depending on the implements that were used with the tractor, the wheels were mounted with the hubs in. If you are planning on trailering the tractor, mount the hubs out with their outer edge even with the end of the axle and you will be able to get it on the trailer inside of the fender wells. Hope this helps.
