We have a 450 that runs fine but then just plain quits. No electrical power, nothing. Let it sit a spell the it runs fine (for awhile).

Thought it was voltage regulator, changed it out - no difference.

It is a 12 volt conversion.

Any thoughts.

Coil and condensor are subject to performance loss when heated up. Change them both out. Start with the cheaper condensor.

Clean all your battery connections including where the battery is grounded on the tractor. Hal

If you had said it quits and there is no spark, I'd say start with a new coil. But, when you say no electircal power at all, it sure sounds like you need to find a bad ground or bad battery lead - just like the other fellows have said.

Had this same problem on a Ford 961. Had a loose connection on the electrical block just past the switch. Cleaned and tightened the connections and fixed the problem. Don't know if the 450 has the same type of wiring block but would look for where the wiring splits off after the switch.

when you say it loses all electrical power, do you loose the lights and everything? if so and the battery doesnt need a charge after an hour of sitting, sounds like a bad connection somewhere. get a 12volt test lite and start tracking down the electrical system. when the tractor dies, and wont restart, go to the ignition coil and check there for voltage. if there is none present, start following that wire back thru the loom and check all connections till you get to the battery. clean and check both battery terminals, recheck battery ground cable to chassis. it may also be a problem with the ignition switch too.

Sounds like it's running off the battery until drained and no charging system to pick up the slack?

Sounds good, but it starts and runs afterabout 30 minutes and will run for 45-60 minutes before quitting again. Do you think the battery will recharge that much just sitting there?

Glenster is on the track.
It needs to be tested while it is in the non operational status, just as soon as it stops.

If it will crank, but will not start, and lights do light, it is either a wire or connection from the Key to the coil/ballast, or a bad ballast, or a bad coil. it could be points/condenser, but less likely.
If it will not crank, and the lights do not work, it is in the Battery cables/connections, or the wire/connections to the Amp meter from the solenoid, or the meter's output terminal, or the meter itself. JimN

Ok fill in the blanks some. You say when it dies you have no power but is it no power or no spark?? Big difference in the 2. Will it turn the engine over just no start or does it every thing go out on you?? If you just loose spark then its most likely your coil is going bad. A bad coil will work just fine for about and hour and then stop working as it heats up. Start it up, run it till it dies and then jump off and check for spark and also lay your hand on the coil and see if its hot, be careful it could be hot enough to burn you if the coil is going bad. When you ask question you always need to give us as much info as you can so we can help you with out trying to read your mind

Sorry, I thought I stated it clearly, no power at all won't turn over can't tell you about lights - don't have any!

I had thought about cables but dismissed it as can't see why it would happen after it ran awhile then quit then run again after it set awhile.

Will check this out since I am the "tractordummy". Will let you know what I find.

Ok so I know now what to tell you to look at. Sounds like your ignition switch is going bad. I'm of course guessing its the type of switch you turn for run and turn more for start right?? If it is then your switch is probably going bad. What happens is as it runs the switch gets hot then stops working, then cools back down and works till hot again.

Put a new coil on it.
