I have a 300U that works great except like many of them the front wheels are loose. What I mean is that they have lots of slop, if you take them off the ground you can turn them 30 degrees before they engage.
I don't know anything about it and was wondering how much the parts to fix it would cost, are they available from a dealer and how easy would it be?
The other problem I am having is that the hyhdraulics on the 2 point hitch stopped working yesterday. Any ideas what could cause this?
The power steering works as well as it ever has and you can hear it trying to move when you push it down (it is already all the way down) but it doesn't do anything when you try to put it up.
I appreciate all ideas.
Thanks!

Are all parts available at the dealer? What is a guess at the cost? 20-100, 200-500? I don"t want to get it apart to find that it is $1000 and have to put it all back. Thanks for the replies!

I rebuilt the steering box on my 300U (the steering box on mine is from a 460U but very similar). Had the shafts built up and re-ground, new bushings made (the 300U bushings are available from the dealer) new shaft seals, new freeze plug at the bottom of the steering wheel shaft and new gaskets for $340, that was about 8 years ago. Compared to a replacement steering box for around $750 back then.

If the slop is at the top of the spindle, where the steering arm attaches at the top of the axle the solution is to take it apart and rework the key system in the shaft and casting. A new larger key might be needed with appropriate machining done to fit it correctly. If tie rods are bad, replace them. If the slop is in the box, rebuilding it with new bushings (possibly machine shop work) will help a lot. They are notorious for mediocre steering boxes. JimN

Couple of things - does the hydraulic system have enough oil. It was common for those types f pumps to blow the oil seals which means most of the hydraulic oil in now in the engine.

Concerning the front end - has the gear box ever been apart. If so the 2 halfs of the case can move and then the wheel on the right side will be loose. It doesn't take much. I've had both these issues on my 300U. Problems could also be due to other issues so you have to start ruling some things out.
