Farmall B in the snow???

Plowed the drive out with the 4WD Ford loader tractor and then grabbed my VOM meter and went to work on the B. Worried about that wire that burnt in two but it was old and I think the insulation shorted to the frame. Took me all of ten minutes of tracing voltages to get it running.
You guys are GREAT teachers. I couldn't have done that a year ago! Then I drove it onto the lawn so I could plow some more and it got stuck! Flat ground with 12" of wet snow on dirt and it was going nowhere. I was wonderin how you guys who were plowing with a B were handling this winter? Do you use chains? Is it working out?

I tried to plow snow with my 300U which had weights and loaded tires. I spent more time stuck than I did pushing snow. Put on a good set of chains and it was like it was a different tractor. Good thing to cause we are getting a lot of snow this year in Ontario. Chains made a huge difference for me.

Be careful if you put chains on. There is not enough clearance by the right side brake linkage unless you set the wheels farther out. Maybe a guard can be made and welded on.

Dave, a set of chains will do way more good than adding weight. An added benefit of chains is that once the snow is gone in the spring, you can just take the chains off and you will have a lightweight tractor again. You can put wheel weights on it if you want, but you will quickly find that you still get stuck. Add a set of chains and you can pretty much go anywhere you want.

Rusty: Right on, I plowed snow for years with my Farmall 130, one set of wheel weights and wheel chains. Two years ago I put the wheel weights on another tractor and I notice very little difference. The first snow this winter I didn't have the chains on. I wasn't long heading for my shed and the chains. I quite often get into drifts 2 to 3 feet deep.

When I first started plowing with the 130 I had a set of Canadian ring chains with 5 corks per ring. Truly unbelievable what that little tractor would push, I rebuilt my blade 3 times to withstand what the 130 could dish out. I sold the ring chains for a couple of reasons, I didn't like what they were doing to a new concrete floor and secondly I was afraid the final drives wouldn't take it. I had broke a final drive 40 years ago. I moved 158 cords of 4' wood from farm woodlot on bobsleds behind 130 in only 113 loads, an using the ring chains. I did break a final drive during that hauling. Bear in mind the 130 had chloride plus wheel weights in those days.

Get a set of chains. Wet snow is very heavy to move. Hal

Didn't think of weights! Sounds like another excuse to do some auction shopping. I was going to throw a couple on the front because the extra passenger makes her a little light in the loafers and I hates it when these old tractors pop up on me....

I would love to oblige but now that it is OUT of the snow bank I think I will keep it there! Going out now to mount the second headlight and the tail light and then she goes back inside for the duration of THIS winter anyhow. I'll save the wiring for spring me thinks...

Glad to hear yuo got it running, Dave!

As far as getting it unstuck, have you tried "twisting" it loose? Split your brakes and try them one at a time turning the wheel in the direction of the brake you're applying. Not guaranteed, but I've used it to get going in snow before.

Chains COULD be a useful appurtenance for the future. ;8^)

Stay warm!

Hey there friend! I left you a Christmas greeting on the taler board a week or so back. I hope you saw it! Never even thought of using the brakes! 18 years on the back of tractors and it never occurred to me! And here I was so proud I got it running and all!!! I am appropriately humble now....Happy New Year!

($#!!*& brakes!)

I did see your very nice note, and thank you! Didn't catch it for a few day, though, and I think my response got dropped off the next morning, after Miss Kim seems to have emptied the spreader. 8^(

While your casting about the auctions loking for wheel weights, you might try looking for a mud scraper for your front wheels. My BN's got 'em, but I'm not sure how common they are. I don't see many. Made of two pieces of flat steel stock, maybe 1/4"x 1-1/2" that are bowed to fit between the front wheels, pointing toward the rear and swept upward and outward to scrape out between the tires and the inner part of the tread on each. They're joined at the front and mount up to the bolster with a U-bolt.

Sounds like another toy....er, OPTION....that I need to look into! I think it is well past time that you post me a picture of that BN of yours! If you get energetic feelin and decide to do it, shoot me one of the scrapers too so I see what it is you are talking about. Thinkin maybe the family and I might find time to do that festival near you this summer. Might need some tips on how to get around the State of Maine mass transit authority issues. Moose pulling a stage coach???
Have to see how work pans out this year.

Is the snow packing between the front wheels??? If it is then thats why you get stuck. Common problem with a trike type tractor. Yes chains will help but not if the snow packs like I said. BTDT and found if you set the tires as wide as you can that helps

Dead on with that one, Rich! Narrow fronts in the snow is a whole new science to learn! HNY!

Dave, you can widen those wheels out, and they will work much better in snow and mud. Them scrapers ain't much. I have them on 3 tractors, and they still ball up.

They do also make a mud scrapper that mounts between the tires/wheels that would help with that problem also
