What type of options did the 656 have? Items such as power steering etc.

I would like to know option were available? Which ones are desirable to have and which ones turned out to be flops.

What years were they available?

Are there any significant differences between the year models?

I am complete newbie to IH tractors and where are parts available for them?

Which parts/assemblies are expensive to repair and which are just minor issues?

Thanks,

Joe

Joe Godoy said: (quoted from post at 15:31:30 01/01/08) I also forgot to ask about a loader for the 656. Which ones are recommended and what is the maximum capacity that is recommended? I dont have much lifting that would need to be done but I would just like to know the limits either by bucket dimensions or weight.

How hard is it to convert one from Row Crop to Utility and what are the differences?

Joe

You cannot convert from row crop to utility or vice versa.

We had a 656 row crop with a Farmhand F11 loader on it. Good for about 1000 lb bales, once we started making bigger bales, the loader suffered.

ALL 656 row crop came with hydraulic power steering, I believe the utilities did too, but not totally sure.

The 656, 666, and 686 all have the same basic rearend and transmission. They changed the tin work to match the current series... engines changed as already mentioned with the 686.

Sorry, I didnt know a modern view of the board existed. All I ever saw was the older threaded version that had the posts in weird orders. This modern view is exactly the way I like to see message boards done.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe I have ti disagree about 656 just being a new M Sm 400 450 560. Much heaver rear end much better hyd, power steering, MUCH BETTER BRAKES.

Chris, you need to park your M beside your 656/666/686 and take a good long look at them. The M is there daddy. I often refer to my 666 as my super super M. It held to true M configuration right to the end. Sure some things are a little heavier, but I am bigger than my daddy too. About 70 pounds bigger. The brakes are very near the same as the Supers had. Just a tad heavier. Standard hydraulic pump for the 400 is 12 GPM's the same as the 656. Nearly the same pressure as well.

Chris: the 656 was very much a part of the evolution that started in 1939 and went from M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450, 560, 656, 666 and ending with 686 in 79. There are a few parts that will fit everyone of them. Of course there were improvments, many of them.

I guess we kinda had to have been there, huh Hugh? :>)

It is simply a "trail of metamorphosis".

Allan: To bad we couldn't be taken in for the same progression of upgrades those tractors saw. I don't know about you, however I can see I'm not going to live long enough to do all the things I have planned.

You may come from healthier stock, however reading your posts, you'll need to live at least to 150 years of age. Are you feeling up to that?

The 656 was available with gasoline, LP, or Diesel engines and a choice of 3pt hitch, 2pt Fast Hitch, or standard drawbar. Most were sold with the optional flat top fenders but a few were sold with the headlights mounted on the cowling and either clamshell fenders or no fenders. PTO was an option but almost every 656 was sold with one.

Joe,

The 656 was just one of the many incarnates of the "M family" that ran from 1939 clear up thru to the last of the 686s.

Very popular tractor. It is getting fairly long in the tooth now and the prices are starting to get a wee bit out of line as well.

Buy a 686/666 and you've pretty much bought the updated version of the old 656. Buy a M/400/560 and you've got the earlier version.

I have read that when the 656 was built that was the heyday for IH tractors. They along with the 856(?) were considered the best tractors IH built. Is that the case and if so why?

Thanks,

Joe

PS. Without sounding too naive how can I tell if it has one or two hydraulics, did they all come with or without power steering, what are the differences between row crop and utility and finally what are the problem areas to look at for purchase?

One more series of questions. What are the differences between a 656, 666 and 686? What makes one more desirable over another?

Thanks,

Joe

PS. I finally figured out why this board seems so disjointed. The posts do not follow sequentially. If someone replies to some particular post in fall in right after that post and in the middle of the others. It makes for a very confusing read!

The biggest difference is in the engines. The 656 used the old glow plug type engine. If glow plugs don't work it won't start unless you pull it or use ether. The 666 and early 686 had the American built D-312 which starts well in most temps. without glow plugs, but does have an ether injection system. The newer 686 used the German built D-310 engine. It is my opinion as well as many others that the D-312 is one of the finest engines ever built by anyone. Standard hydraulic pump for late 656 all 666/686 was the 17 GPM for everything except the 3 point hitch They and 656 have a seperate pump for the 3 point hitch. Early 656 used a 7 gpm lift pump and late 656 and all 666/686 used a 9gpm lift pump. Any of the 3 are very good tractors. The biggest difference is that the 666/686 start a lot easier on cold mornings.
