Hi everybody, I would like to know how much the level of oil should be from the top of the pump housing to the top of the oil level. so that way I will be able to take some measurement and make my own one. I know that the capacity is 6 quarts if I remember correctly but the pump is leaking from about everywhere lol so I would like to have a dipstick to check the level.

thank you very much for your help and time and I wish you all a happy new year

thank you very much guys it is really appreciated. I won't change the seal & gasket this winter because I am going to the college and I am only at home on the weekends. I am studying in diesel mechanic (heavy equipment). So by the time I finish my college it will let me the time to buy a service manual for the tractor. thank you again and happy new year

Just got back from the barn. My dipstick measures 11&1/4 inches from the top of the filler tube. The full mark is located 2" up from the bottom. This would mean that full is 9&1/4" down from the top of the filler tube. Suggest using a heavy guage wire (like #9) & bending a loop at the top & notching it at the full mark. You could then hang it on the tractor for fast checks. Hope this helps. Lynn

you prolly need the seal where the drive dog goes into the housing and the housing gasket. pretty easy to change, you need to drop the pump, seperate it from the housing, slide a piece of flat stock in the pump gears, then tap the dog counterclockwise, it will unscrew, new seal there, put the new gasket on, line up the fork when you put the halves back together. takes maybe an hour or 2.

Drain the oil. If it looks okay, put it back in with enough added (or removed) to make six quarts. Measure the level.

Fill it full, won't hurt a thing. Your dipstick is likely in the bottom of resivoir. Might take a magnet and retrieve it.

I used to fill mine almost full as well. I did have a disaster a few years ago. I borrowed a cultipacker from a friend to put in some alfalfa and I didn't have a vent on my belly pump on an M. I went to the trouble of filling the reservoir full because the cultipacker was so heavy. I went to my garden to try it out and when I dropped it, there was a loud pop. I hit the clutch and saw oil running out from under the tractor. I unhooked the cultipacker and tried to drive it to the barn. It wouldn't move. Got another M and towed the broke tractor away and planted the hay.

Pulling the belly pump I found it had ruptured from the pressure from the cultipacker going down and not having a vent. The front of the case split horizontally and moved forward hitting the pressure plate and breaking all three ears off the pressure plate.

I put in an old pressure plate and clutch, and robbed a belly pump from an old MD. I got everything together in a few days of spare time and took it for a test spin. It always feels so good to get something going again. About 1/4 mile from the house, in road gear, it slowed and then stopped. I towed it back to the house and could only turn it over one way with a big screwdriver. After several tries it won't turn at all. We think the side load on the flywheel busted the crank in the rear main and now it is bound up with thrust both ways. It's been ten years and the tractor is still waiting for a teardown.

I don't fill the belly pumps too full any more.

Andy, I suspect you have a good point there. Mine all have vented plugs. I also let all my implements down when unhooking so no extra oil is dumped in resivoir when dropping implement. Makes them easier to hook hose up too. I have never seen one busted this way, but it would be quite possible.

It made me feel real stupid. I had bought this tractor in real good shape, but it had a pipe cap on the fill and I never thought a thing about it. The tractor had been used in Kansas to power an emergency generator for a grocery store. It had been inside for twenty years or more, and well cared for.

I don't have pressure quick disconnects so I always have to lower implements before disconnecting. My second error here was, in a hurry of course, hooking the cultipacker up to make sure the tractr would lift it off the stop, then thinking "don't be a fool check the hydraulic fluid" so I topped it off with the implement raised which I rarely do. Even in the field when replenishing a leaky hydraulic system the implement is usually on the ground because you don't know it needs fluid until it won't lift.

Yep, I see just exactly how that could have happened. I always fill mine until I can touch it with my finger, and not had any problems yet. I also don't fill them with a raised implement. I will remember your troubles though and take care not to do that if I can.

If you need only the regular dipstick ( not the one used with the remote control ), I bought a new one a couple of years ago from IH and it wasn't that much $$.
