Hi everyone. I am going to need to overhaul the waterpump on my M.

If there is someone out there who is familiar with the construction of this pump: I was wondering if it is possible to replace the two greaseable ball bearings in the pump with sealed ball bearings.

I have seen in a supply catalog where a company is offering rebuilt pumps with sealed bearings.

I can see some possible advantages: no grease seals to install, no greasing of the pump bearings (would still have to grease for the impeller shaft) and best of all no grease flying around the fan blade and radiator.

Would anyone know what bearing number this would require?

You still have to grease the water pump even if you replace the ball bearings with sealed ones. The second grease fitting greases the internal sleeve bearing on the water pump drive shaft. That is the one that gets grease all over your fan anyway and is important to grease. The ball bearings support the fan and take the fan belt load and are external to coolant. Roger

Sealed bearings will work just fine. They work on cars and trucks and are subjected to a lot higher speeds too.

If you are good at keeping up on maintenance. Greasing the water pump I would put in an opened bearing. But if you don"t grease the water pump like most people, sealed bearing would be the way to go.

The basic bearing number will be the same as what you now have. The prefix and/or the suffix will be added to denote the sealed version. CENTAUR
