Can the shaft that supports the clutch and runs the left brake and pass' thru to the peddle on the right side be removed without a major take apart?
I need to build up the shaft at the clutch peddle due to wear, so that the peddle will not move side to side.
What have you all done to fix this problem?

After removing the pedals and half-moon keys, use emery cloth or a file to clean up the shaft ends so it will slip out easier. Replace the seals while you have the shaft out. When you pull the shaft out, transmission oil will drain out down to that level. Maybe park with the front end uphill??

I have just installed some lightweight shim stock between the shaft and pedal connection and it tightens them right up. You don't have to remove the shaft, just take the clutch pedal off and clean up and then cut 1 inch wide strips and slide back on. Really gets them back snug in a hurry and doesn't drag on the brake pedal. Migraine

I have removed the shafts on both of my 400s. You will need to remove both of the brake pedals and the clutch pedal also. After removing the woodruff keys it will slide out easily enough. I don't remember if it even matters which side it slides out.
Weld it up.
Turn it down.
Slide back in.
I turned mine at work myself. Pretty easy job.

IH disc brake fix in reply to BigRed400, 12-30-2007 15:06:13
If you have new discs and maybe actuators in those brakes, now is the time to fix them right. Wear on the housing and bullpinion housing where the discs contact allows the actuator to overtravel. You need to machine the mounting surface of the brake housing down. New discs and the actuator stacked in the housing should come within .025" of a straightedge laid across the mount face. Much more than that and you get what you got; lockup. Later dry disc brake tractors had removable shims. Don't measure off old discs, when you replace them the housing will be too shallow.
