left lane: Bob is correct 251068 R1 is a part number. All IH part numbers of that era ended in R something.

The engine serial number is directly below No. 1 Spark plug, on a machined flat surface, and the numbers are about 1/4" high and stamped in place rather than cast in place. If your tractor is very far into Super A production the tractor serial number and engine serial number will not be the same, not even close.

The surest way to tell an A from a Super A is factory hydraulics, A didn't have htdraulics, Super A did.

If you want to find the year of tractor, go to casting date codes. Day and month by number and year by letter. About 1/2" high digits with what looks like round head, blade type screws cast between each of day, month and year. Z is 54, Y is 53, X is 52, W is 51, V was not used, U and T are both 50, 49 is S, and you can go backward from there.

found serial#11122 can only see part of first 2, first 1 is stamped sideways. i don't know if that makes a difference. date code looks like *II*9*8* the letter at the begining looks like two i's but i'm assuming it is an H which would make sense with the serial number being a 1940. what do you think. i sanded everything down so i could read it. date code is off engine. are there any others. thanks for the help

H is 1938, Farmall H's did not appear until 1939. It is possible that the engine was cast on 9*8*H, that is the correct format, ie Sept 8 1938. However, 9/8/38 is a little early for the block to have been cast for a 1939 model, and your serial indicates that it is a 1940, so the casting number should be no earlier than 1939 or I. Look for casting numbers on other parts of the tractor.

date code on engine is cast under #2 spark plug right under firing order *11*9*9* cleaned up well, easy to read. found several other date codes on tractor all ending with the letter I. found one date code ending with an s. I assume that part had been changed, assuming all date codes end in I except that one and the serial # corresponds to a 1940, would it be safe to assume it is a 1940. some date codes only had one number and one letter. i.e. ( *8*I* )I found two parts like that. they were smaller parts and other than part numbers those were the the only other numbers on it

Should have said Farmall A, also first produced in 1939, rest of response including 1940 serial doesn't change, except that if you do have an early model, the engine casting number may be the only one you find on an A. Not likely if the engine is original that you will have an H year code on a 1940 tractor.

CNKS: I know you've always maintained casting date codes are never more than 4 months, 6 months at very most, before the tractor was assembled.

I have recently run across a couple of tractors that have more than 1 year spread between serial number and codes. One has late 53 serial number and all X codes, some as early as March 52, yet every code on the tractor are X, and first half of 52. What is quite unusual is every casting has a code, even items like belt pulley drive, front wheels, pto, etc. Quite often some of those smaller castings don't have date codes. I am satisfied the serial number is original and this is an original tractor. I have not seen the second tractor.

This is not the first time I've been told this, and one guy even suggested he's seen original tractors with casting date codes over two years before the serial number. I'm not declaring this as fact, however would like your comments.

NOT the engine serial number... in reply to left lane, 12-30-2007 08:09:17
251068-r1 is the block CASTING number, NOT the block SERIAL number.

At least two others guys on this site "think" they have the same engine SERIAL # as you!

Engine may have been changed or rebuilt, therefore numbers may not match. Snap and post some pics.

If it has the touch-control hydraulics it is a Super. The Super A also runs a little higher Rpm than a regular A.Hope this helps.
