Did all M's and H's have the Low High charge position on the light switch or only those with the third brush in the gen.

I have a 51 H with the 3 pos switch. Down the road from me is another 51 H with the 4 pos switch. We were stumped too! My 48 M has a 4 pos switch.

Hi Fellas, my experience with these is that the cut outs were used originally with the 3 brush adjustable generators. On low charge they should put out 6 to 8 amps and 11 to 13 on high. Basically to compensate for having the lights on. The newer h's or m's with voltage regulators should have no adjustable brush. When adjusting that brush it should be placed no closer than 3.2 commutator bars to the fixed brush closest to it. Any other applications that you may find are probably usually just a quick fix or just someone being sold the wrong generator for their needs. I do know that if you leave your H on high charge while grinding feed with a Letz Burr Mill for your father-in-law that the Battery will blow the top off. Just food for thought. Tim, I have a 1950 H, all orignal, with the voltage regulator set-up and three position switch. The generator has three brushes. Look in your parts manual.

All of the six volt generators had the third brush. Didn't make any difference if it was the cut-out relay system with the 4 position switch or the newer voltage regulator system with the 3 position switch.

I believe the earlier ones with cut outs had the High/Lo charge in the switch. Later they were switched to regulators that control the charge rate on its own.

Some controversy on this. Models after about 49-50 had the 3 position switch, voltage regulator and distributer. As to the 3rd brush, my 1950 C (H/M should be the same) has the 3 position switch and a 3rd brush generator. I have always thought that the 4 position switch, cutout relay and 3rd brush generator disappeared with the introduction of the distributer and voltage regulator, but as others will undoubtably say that is not a hard and fast rule.

My 1950 M has factory distributor, and 4 position switch with relay. My 50 Cub also has 4 position switch, but did come with a mag on it. I haven't noticed the 52 SC, but the 53 has the 3 position switch. No telling what they did.

I think IH did what they wanted until they used up all their parts. Looking at my C manual, it indicates that the 4 position switch was with a generator with an ADJUSTABLE 3rd brush and cutout relay, the tractor pictured has a magneto. The 3 position switch supposedly comes with a generator with a FIXED 3rd brush, a regulator, and a distributer. But my C has a 3 position switch, voltage regulator, distributer and an ADJUSTABLE 3rd brush -- thus the first sentence of my reply. All these combinations work, so it really doesn't matter -- since I bought the tractor in 2002 hard telling how it came when new.

That is what I think as well. Looks like they might have put on one then the other. Like you say it don't matter as long as they work.
