I have a 686 with the 312 in it and like it a lot. It has great power, and is lite on fuel usage. I'd recommend one in a heartbeat.

I have a 312 in a 686 and a 310 in a 756. Both engines have their strong points and weak points. The 312 starts better, a little more power and is basically a noisey h@llcat always ready to go. The 310 is quieter but harder starting but sips fuel and is a wildcat in kittens clothing just waiting to be opened up. The 310 will last 3 times as long as a 312 between rebuilds but the 310's fuel system parts are high priced. I like my 756 and 686 with the edge to the 686/312 as its a smaller easier handling tractor for the power.

Maybe I need a 310. My 312 has 7000 hours on it and going strong. That would be 21000 before rebuilding the 310 minimum. The 312 does shake the ground. It really roars sometimes.

Ran a Hydro 86 for a couple of years for a friend, it had the American D312, always started no matter what, ran very nice, and was reasonable on fuel for a Hydro tractor.

IH was already in trouble when the 86 series came out and needed to save money wherever they could. They had thousands of left-over D310 and D358 German diesel engines laying around, so they used them in the 686, 786, 886 and 3088 tractors instead of building more American "small-block" diesels.

The American D312 and D360 are the better engines, for sure.

Nat, I figured that money and or company politics played the deciding role.

Don't know the correct answer, but I have a 666 with the 312. A buddy of mine has a 686 with 310. Mine seems to start easier, has a bit more power as well as lugging ability. It even burns less fuel if that makes sense. We have worked them both side by side, and he wants to trade every time we see each other. As to why they switched on the 686 is a mystery to me. Maybe someone can tell us both about the reasoning for the switch to 310.

The parts manager at the IH dealer I use told me the put the 310 and the 312 in the 686 with no rhyme or rythem. One would come off the line with one and the next with the other.

I was under the impression that they changed all together at a certain time. I know on my service manual it refers to early 686 with D-312 and late production with D-310. I don't know. I do know that 312 will rock. It never knows the 3X16 plows are on it at 12 inches or more. When dad still done all the buying we got a new 584 in 80. It ws parked beside a 686 with wide front, canopy and I think it was the 310. I said boy that one would be nice, but he thought it was bigger than we needed at the time. Wasn't but about 800 dollars difference in them. I waited a long time to find a good one at good price, but lucked up on the 666 about 5 years ago for 4400 bucks. Had new tires all around, good paint, good TA, and roared to life with a bump of the switch. I like it quite well.
