I just got hold of a "53 Farmall Super M, and need help in IDing something on the right hand side of the tractor.

Exactly 1/2 way up the side of the gear housing, about 8 inches in front of the brake pedals, is a shaft coming out, with a lever on it that has "M&W Gear Co." molded into the lever. This connects to a control rod that goes up to a holder on the light bar.

Could this be an aftermarket overdrive? I"ve never seen one on any other M or Super M. If I can, I"ll try to post a picture.

i agree with the other guys, looks like a 9 speed. i havent seen one with the linkage set up quite like yours, but, theres lots of stuff i havent seen!!! my m has 9 speed also, but it uses a cable to shift it. here is a picture, the 9 speed cable is the third one down from the upper left, it loops around the belt pulley and goes into the trans case. the 9 speed is a real handy add on, it gives you 4 more speed ranges above 4 th gear. i shift mine stopped, in neutral, clutch in, then move the control rod.

M&W "nine-speed" transmission. Increased the ground speed as well as PTO speed of first four gears. Didn"t change 5th gear because fifth gear was direct drive from input to output.

Steve, I am no authority on the M&W 9 speed, but I think all the extra gears are between 4th and 5th aren't they?
