I had to pull the governor off of our C and I got it out of time. I don't have a book for this tractor so I just winged it but can't seem to get it right. I lined up the single punch mark on the governor gear between the two punch marks on the cam gear and pointed the rotor as close to #1 as it would go. I am getting a pretty good backfire through the exhaust so I doubt I am very close. What is the correct process here?

As long as you are not using a magneto it does not matter if the governor gear is in time or not. just put it together and time it at the distibutor gears.

It will matter as to the position of the rotar.

When you have a distributor you can have the gear installed in any position. The shaft in the distributor adapter goes into the slot in the back of the governor. When you install the distributor into the adapter just point the rotor to where ever it needs to be. It works fine unless you want to put a mag on it.

Never tried just moving the gear, but I do see what you are saying.

single mark on cam goes with single mark on gov gear. no wonder you are getting backfire.

Gene, there isn't any single punch mark on my gov gears. Only two punch marks on it. I went to the shop and looked at 2 of them to make sure. I am going to look one more time as it was a bit dark in that corner. My book also says 2 punch marks on gov gear mates to two marks on cam gear for the C.

You are correct i just got the dots mixed up. Just check when you get the dots lined up then check the rotor on the mag it will be lined up with the rotor pointing to #1 going to the spark plug

John, George has it on the head. You're 90 degrees out one way or the other. You'll have to match the two dots up with the two dots. As far as I can find, only the H matched two dots up to one between the cam and governor gears.

You're on the right track reinstalling your rotor to point to #1, but make sure you're engine is on the top of the compression stroke on #1 before you do this. If you set it up with #1 on exhaust (and #4 on compression), you'll be a whole 180 out.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I think when # 1 is on TDC, the magneto drive slot is horizontal. You will have to have the mag off to check.

Should be double punch marks lined up on cam and governor gear. The single punch mark on cam gear lines up with double mark on crankshaft gear. Not governor gear. Try this and it will run.

I think that is what I was trying to say. I have the punch marked tooth on the governor gear lined up between two punch marked teeth on the cam gear. I saw the single punch mark on the cam gear and figured that was to time it to the crank.

The A service manual (C should be the same) says to line up single with single and double with double. "--two punch marks on a tooth of the camshaft gear should line up with two punch marks between teeth on the magneto and governor pinion."
