I was going to fire my 54 Super H today after nearly a year taking up shop space. Complete restoration front to back top to bottom. Put a couple gallons of gas in and only a few drips in the bowl. Sediment bowl is new from OEMTP. I blew air in from both ways no results. It looks to me the part sticking up in the tank is under the baffle. Has anyone had a aftermarket bowl make contact with the baffle blocking flow? Now I have to get the darn gas out with out messing up the paint. Kinda ticked me off so I went to work puting a carb kit in a Briggs powered genny. Got it all together, fired it up and set the carb. It was purring like a kitten and all at once it starts to sputter and smoke and fuel runs from the carb. Darn float musta stuck or filled up. Not my day for fuel systems.

Isn't the baffle just a piece of sheet metal? It can't be more than 1/16" thick on edge, and is probably closer to 1/32". There's no way it could possibly be blocking a hole that's at least 1/8" in diameter.

The baffle is folded on the bottom. Kinda L shaped to give the baffle strenth. Its got a 3/4 or so flat bottom.

If you"re going to use a punch you may want to try to find one made of brass or aluminum. The thought of (steel hammered into steel) plus (gasoline vapors) makes me cringe -- or is the baffle not steel?

Are you sure there is enough fuel in the tank? Mine sticks up into the tank a little bit so the crud at the bottom can't get into the sediment bowl... takes a couple gallons to get it up over that. Just a thought to check on.

Yup, enough fuel. I pressurized the tank with a rag around my air hose and it only made it drip a little faster. I pressurized the fuel line and I could hear a few bubbles in the tank. So its either plugged or up againsed the baffle. Also thought of a way to remove the bowl with out removing the fuel, lift the front of the tractor with my gantry crane so the fuel runs to the rear of the tank.

Scott:
As you probably well know, the SH stage II tank is different from a stage I and/or a regular H. The bung hole is further back to make room for the live hydraulic unit. I don't think the change was well thought out. I looked inside mine and could tell it would be very close to touching the baffle. For whatever reason, mine is not touching - barely. ("Thank ga-wad", as they say in Indiana.) However, my sediment bowl assembly/valve is a NAPA piece - the one with the in-tank filter screen in the catalog - with the threads run through a die to re-size them to the Farmall size. (Can't remember what die I used.) Anyway, it barely misses the baffle. Hope this helps you.

That "Only a few drips in the bowl" happens every time ya have the bowl off.

Choke it and fire it up; it will purge the trapped air all on it's own.

Allan. afraid its not the case with this one. I had the bowl off and still just a drip now and then. Can't get the darn thing started with no fuel in the rebuilt carb and I don't have a little gas tank to rob off somthing to feed it. CityBoy-McCoy I'am sure your right as a new bowl should not be plugged and should be machined correctally. But I did not inspect it so you never know with guality control these days. From looking in the tank I can just see one side of the inlet and it sure looks like its up againsed the bottom of the baffle. Oh well live and learn I guess, I'll tackle it tommorow.

Stick a punch up there and use a little persuasion to move the baffle over a little.
