I just purchased a 1959 farmall cub but in 2nd gear it has noise when going forward. Reverse seems not to have the noise 2nd and 3rd does. My question is where would you recommend I start looking and at what? What is a good manual for it and where can I get it? I was around a 1948 SA and it has the same type on noise in the trans/rearend. It seems this may be a common problem with farmall. (don't know) just wondering where to start to try to fix. How much trouble is it to repair? any information would help thanks in advance.

Some noise is very common and not a problem.

They don't get much simpler than a Cub transmission. It is simply a top and bottom shaft with the sliding gears on the top shaft (which comes all the way from the engine). Sounds like a problem with the sliding gear since it makes noise in 3rd and 2nd. I would pull the top cover off the transmission and see if there are chips out of the 3rd/2nd sliding gear or if it is real loose on the splined shaft. Changing it isn't easy as you need to split the tractor in front of the transmission. Roger
