I have a "79 1086 and hate it. Is there a way to make the shifting easier? It"s a good tractor but poor at loader work.

As others said make sure everything is adjusted right. If your TA ever goes out and you don't really need it, eliminate it, you won't have to worry about going out again, and it usually makes it shift easier. Lee

Allan, I thought our 1256 was great on the loader - the shifting was easy, leave it in 2nd gear and use high range and reverse. Pretty much had decent speeds then. I used 3rd reverse in the hay field when I had a ways to back up... You're right about the clutch, we usually got about 2 or 3 years out of the clutch on it, and the TA went out the second year we had it.

Having said all that, the 4450 MFWD 740 makes the 1256 F235 look like an H with a trip bucket loader...

That's exactly why I didn't give up and run this old Hydro 70 right straight into the river when it was dealin' me fits.

I've got a 1066 that I can put the loader on also and it will shift with one finger. But, the darned thing, on top of being a diesel, is just not a good loader tractor (in my opinion). Too much shifting and too hard on the clutch in that big monkey.

That Hydro is just soooo darned sweet when it comes to loader work. Can't imagine feeding without it now.

Allan

Update unit to 30 series hyd trans brake, IH had these kits at one time. You could find one in salvage complete off of 30 series tractor. Retro fit with supply lines and firewall switch. The brake is electro-hyd and double brake fits where original lever and plate was.

gb. thoes old tractor are great for field work had a1066 and 1086 now i just repair tractor for a living. they werent made for loader work. that transmission was made for pulling not loader work. several of the guys i do work for have loader on them just not much you can do for them to work better, they were hard shifting when new. idle them back and as previse post said use clutch and brake to free transmission for better shifting. if the ta works try using it in th low side that somtimes will help.

How does it shift when the engine is not running? Repair any worn linkages to get it shift smoothly.

Make sure all the cab mounts are in good shape. Check to see that you have the clutch linkage pivot mounted to the cab and not the clutch housing. Yours may be new enough to have come that way from the factory. Make sure all the clutch adjustments are as they should be. Get in the habit of lifting the pedal a little bit off the floor when actually moving the shift levers. That releases the transmission brake to relieve any windup on the transmission gears.
